Star Wars Episode I - Too violent?

My son, a first grader, has decided to be Anakin Skywalker for Halloween. The trouble is that he has never seen any of the Star Wars movies. Every Friday night, as a family thing, we rent a movie, make popcorn and have a 'Family Movie Night' together. The kids love it because they get to stay up late that one night and we all snuggle. So, of course Derek now wants to see Star Wars, Episode I. I haven't seen it, but my husband has and he has some reservations, saying it is pretty violent. For those of you who have seen it, what do you think? Have your kids seen it? I am not a complete movie lightweight as far as the kids are concerned. They have seen all of the Harry Potter movies (but will not see the new one yet, owing to its PG-13 rating). They have also seen the Princess Bride and National Treasure as well as most of the popular animated movies out there like The Incredibles.

What do you think? Is it appropriate for a first grader? And lets not forget his four year old sister (who, being the second child, watches movies that I would have screamed at had anyone tried to show them to my first child at her age!).

It's a pretty hard call. There are some violent scenes. But, they are "cartoony". I mean no blood, etc... I won't let my kids watch any movies with realistic violence, sex, etc... but the Spiderman, Star Wars etc.. have all been Ok in my book.

My DS, who is 7, has seen all of the Star Wars films, with the exeption of the latest one (#3). DH and I saw that one in the theater, and decided it was too violent. I don't think the 1st one was too bad, but I will say that the original 3 held his attention alot better than the newer 2. Your DS may not totally be able to follow the action, and may miss out on some of the deeper elements. Violence wise, though I think it would be okay, although I have to admit my memory is a little fuzzy. : )

Pretty much what I was thinking it would be! Thanks for the advice!

Coming in late on this one, Susan. I don't remember to be honest. Hubby watches those thing with him. I know he saw a few movies but they were the first trio. I'm not sure about the latter. Sorry...I wish I could be more helpful. YOu can always alook it up online. THere should be a website with the name of the movie and a .com at the end. Have you tried that?
