Stressed out Kids??

Are kids today more stressed out?

Do you think kids today are more stressed out than kids were when you were young? What are the biggest things that stress out your kids? How old are they, and how do they handle stress?

Yes, I came to this board to find out if other parents are having this problem. I have a seven year old daughter. She has some school anxiety problems and it all seems to be caused from the amount and level of work expected these days. She has developed a fear of tests, especially if they are given on the computer. There is no time to master anything anymore. A lot of it has to do with "The no child left behind" law. But the thing is I think a lot of kids who can't keep up are going to be left behind. I wouldn't be surprised if the level of dropouts goes up. I hope someone is watching that statistic.

I also find that my kids learn much more from me than they do in school. I would say at least 75% of what my daughter has learned is from me tutoring her in the summer and after school. To me it just seems that they are pushing this work at them and expecting the parents to do all the teaching.

Also I have a son with dyslexia/ADD and he is also expected to meet these standards regardless (although with accommodations)he is in 7th grade and struggling to learn Intro to Algebra and also has no choice but to take Spanish ( which he is failing). His science is at least 2 years ahead of the 7th grade science I did at that age. In the case of my son about 95% of what he has learned has been from me and not schools. I home schooled him for 2 1/2 years because he was not learning how to read in school. If it wasn't for me doing that, he would still read at a 1st grade level. This year he is having to stay after school for extra tutoring and I'm still teaching him too! I have also heard that a foreign language is required in high school now. I have no idea how he will get through it. I worry about him becoming a dropout.
