What do you think of...

6 & 7 year old girls doing hip hop dance? Do you think it's too "old" or suggestive for them? My dd (almost 7) was in an 8 week hip hop club during lunch. I didn't think 8 weeks was too bad. Now the company that ran the club is setting up a class for the girls in the club. I'm not sure how I feel about this... Ballet is one thing, jazz is one thing... hip hop is a little more mature and she's trying to grow up to fast anyway. She'd be Hannah Montana or Hillary Duff in a heartbeat if I'd let her. I was hoping the time wouldn't work out but it fits in our schedule. Price isn't too bad and there's a recital which is always fun for the kids.

What do you think?

It's not hip-hop that is bad in itself... it's the poor music choices and innapropriate costumes some studios put those little girls in. I see it a great deal and I cringe each time. For example, at a recent community talent show there were several questionable groups but the one that took the cake was a bunch of 8-year-olds dressed in VERY skimpy gold bikini type outfits and grinding away to a song about being a "gold digger." Yuck.

However, I've also seen wonderful hip-hop programs. We have one in our county that combines hip-hop dancing with international music. The kids wear simple colored t-shirts and longer shorts and are just amazing. I never thought of hip-hop dancing to an irish jig but it is urban and exciting without objectifing the kids.

I would see if they have any recitals coming up and go see one first. If you want to just sign her up, look in on classes and make sure you see the costumes before you plunk down the money for it. Like I said, there certainly are good hip-hop programs but there are some that honestly think little girls dancing in suggestive costumes to suggestive music as cute. This is true will all dance groups actually... not just hip hop.

Sorry, this is a real sensitive spot for me. I grew up in very high quality children's theatre and spent 10 years in professional theatre as a stage manager. My kids are very involved in children's theatre as well There is a huge difference between these "performance" groups and kids that are really learning a craft.

Thank you for articulating my concerns!!! I like the idea of checking out the studio. The flyer they sent home did invite people to stop by the studio. Maybe we'll do that. They video taped the kids today and asked them to wear lounge pants (you know the plaid flannel type) to give it a somewhat uniform look. The music they were using during club hours at school was from High School Musical and the words are just fine - not Raffi but not rap either. It's such a hard age because they want to be older than they are but they're still so little. They're too old for Raffi, The Wiggles, and the preschool stuff but they're not ready for Hillary Duff, Hannah Montana, and that genre either.

Thanks for the input. If she's still asking about the class next week, we'll go check out the studio.

I don't think it should matter what I think. If *you*, your dd's mother, don't feel comfortable with the style of dance then you shouldn't "cave" in to what the other parents are doing, or what your DD wants. That's why we're the parents, to set appropriate guidelines and boundaries for behavior, dress and actions.

I agree, I'd go check out the studio. Maybe they'll have group pictures posted so you can see what kind of outfits they use..

My dd took hip-hop from Sep-Dec and love it. There wasn't any grinding or anything "sexual" to it and the song wasn't "hoochie" but had a great beat to it.

Hope it's something that works out and your dd has fun!

I try not to judge things before I know more about them. I would go and ask to see some pictures of past shows and ask what kinds of songs they dance to. Hip-hop can be a lot of fun, provided they aren't dancing like grown up women in cages on tables, LOL!!!

Good point! She hasn't mentioned the class in about a week so I think I'll take her lead and do investigation if she brings it up again.
