you. After all dd's success last yr. being straight A Honor Roll all yr. this yr. has been a disaster. Her teacher hardly taught, handed things out & told the kids to do it, it didn't matter what. never modeled any writing, etc. I think you get the picture. Most writing assignments were never finished because she told the kids to forget it & started a new topic. She refused to follow dd's IEP & actually held it against her. She told me after the 1st report card that dd would never make honor roll because she had a disability, I couldn't even answer her because she just walked away into a crowd of kids. BTW, Nik wasn't the only one she treated badly but Nik was the the one she treated the worst.

I say this because in the past month moms have told me that what their dd's came home & told them about what was being said to Nik in the classroom by the teacher they considered bullying.

I kind of went thru the same thing this year with my son--not nearly as bad as your DD, but he had a terrible teacher that made him not want to go to school.

Thanks, I keep telling Nik that next yr. will be a better yr. She'll be in middle school & everything will be different. We've spoken to the guidance counselor at the MS & he had a teacher in mind for Nik & he was very impressed w/her test scores & wanted to put her in w/someone who was their best science teacher since those scores were so high. I just hope he didn't change his mind after the IEP meeting. He said this yrs. scores were disappointing. I told dh maybe he should stop in & see him again before school is out to make sure she's getting the teacher he 1st wanted to put her with. He also said this teacher was very good w/home/school communication & didn't feel threatened by parent questions.

At this point we're not sure what to do. I think if we decide to go speak to the GC at the MS again just to be sure about next yrs. teacher just dh should go.

Nik's self confidence is gone & the poor kid is just defeated & down on herself. I somehow need to help her w/that over the summer. I also want to try my best to give her the right fit for next yr.It's amazing that no one says she was straight A Honors last yr something can't be right this yr.

This teacher appears VERY ineffective and flighty in her lessons. And even if administration was unaware of just how bad she was treating Nik, I'm sure they were aware of her teaching.

My heart just goes out to you & Nik for having to deal with this...and to hear you talk of how Nik acts when you mention it to her just rips my heart out.

Thank You, those are mine & dh's sentiments also. I just want to put this yr. behind us & start new at the middle school. Her test scores show what she's capable of & her grades from last yr. BTW, she's still had all B's & 1 C this yr. & has been in grade 6 spelling book. The class only read 2 1/2 books all yr. as a class so you can see how the teacher conducted things. No discussions along the way. Thankfully dd loves to read & more than made up that deficite on her own.

Thanks again for your imput.

Dee, I'm so sorry to hear she had such a rough year. Even though it was only one teacher, one teacher can make such a difference (positive or negative) that it can change a child's attitude toward school forever.

I know in your heart of hearts you want to prevent any other child from being treated like Nik was by the teacher. But, honestly, I don't know how effective putting it in her personal file will be since she is changing districts. It would give the new district something to look at and address (and watch for), IF they actually transfer the file district to district. (This folder may never leave the school!)

If it is kept "professional", I don't think it would hurt Nik. But then again, there's always school politics and you never know who's chummy with whom...ugh!

That was also a very horrible thing for the speech teacher to say. Very unprofessional, as well.

So, I'm really not helping you out much. If it were me, at this point (since the year is over AND the teacher is leaving the school), I would just let it go, but be prepared to deal with it if (and hopefully it won't) ever were to happen again.
