Welcome to the board! I'm sure you will ge lots of input from everyone here. I think there is a split here on the board of girls that use tampons and ones that don't at all. My teenager is 16 and has had he's for about 18 months now. The first few cycles she did not use a tampon at all, but once summer hit and she was cheering at school she went ahead and started using them. It will all depend on flow also. They tend to be sporadic cycles at first, so she mat want to start wearing a pantiliner all the time after it is over to prevent surprises and leakage. My DD uses the Kotex U tampons and the always affinity pads for nighttime use. A lot of the girls on the board use playtex sport liht I think, they tend to be slimmer for girls and easier to insert when the time comes. If she is cramping and is uncomfortable, ibuprofen usually is the best thing to start out trying, you can do midol or pampren, but you'll want to watch as usually the have a diuretic and caffeine in them, and caffiene can actually make the cramps worse for some girls.

Feel free to jump into any conversations you'd like, we love having new members!

No tampons yet here. DD is 14 and just started a few months ago. She's still squeamish at the idea of tampons and so this summer, just opting not so swim during periods (which is easy to do since she's busy and we don't have a pool. She can wear pads and board shorts to the beach and then just not go in the full way (not uncommon for teen girls anyway.) I'm sure by next summer, she'll feel more comfortable with tampons.

I guess we're sort of the odd ones out here. My daughter, now 16, got her period when she was 11. They were very irregular that year, but she started using tampons later that summer, when she was 12, because she was at camp.

I don't think you odd out at al, I encouraged jordyn when she started to use tampons right away because I didn't want her feeling like she had to limit herself just because of her period and pads. We had taken a class together when she was around 10 and part of the class was they had all the different brands of tampons and pads out and unwrapped, they could feel them, pour stuff on them, dunk them in water etc. To see hoe they worked and everything. Jordyn tried several different tampons and pads before she finally decided on what she uses now. But, you also can't force a girl to use a tampon if she is not comfortable with the concept or feeling of it.
