My step-son who will be 14 in May acts like an 8 yr old around his dad.

Have you asked your DH why he does these things that bother you and what does he say? Things like fixing a plate for him I would not even mention, cause what is it to you if he decides he wants to fix a plate for his kid that he doesn't see all the time? As far as not sleeping with you, but sleeping on the couch instead, that does affect you. On the Making a Second Marriage work board, I remember there was a woman who complained that her DH took so long putting his 5 yr old DD to bed (she refused to go alone, even though she did that at her mom's house) that he ended up falling asleep in the DD's room and never went to bed w/ his wife. She did have to bring it up and he agreed to work on this issue. Obviously, the kid enjoys getting the attention from his dad. Maybe he feels that acting like a baby is the only way he can get it. Maybe if dad did more things w/ him, then he wouldn't feel the need to act this way. You know how behavior modification specialists will say to ignore the behavior you don't want and reinforce the behavior you do want? Like ignore his whining & don't give in to him when he's acting babyish, but reward him by giving him more attention for acting his age.

As far as being afraid to take a shower, doesn't your bathroom door have a lock on it? You could show him how to use a lock. My 13 yr old son does have some crazy fears--even now, he doesn't really like to be upstairs in the house alone. When he goes to bed before me, sometimes I think he makes himself stay awake until I go to bed.
