I am new to the board and I am really hoping for some hopeful responses. My dd is 13 and is only 4'9". She started her period at 10 and most things I have read say that girls only grow for 2 years after they start their period. If this is true then my daughter is done growing. :(

Well, I've heard of it. I don't know that it's very typical outside girls who started periods unusually early or girls who

Maybe your Doctor could help. Family history can be helpful in assessing growth patterns and height

Turtletime I think you are right about the hands/feet thing. My younger dd is growing at a faster rate than my oldest and I find intense hunger and foot growth precede her spurts.

Yesterday we were shoe shopping and dd6's (almost 7 though)

I don't recognize your name and don't notice a post count, so assume you are new to our board.

What does her pediatrician say? As others have pointed out, if her growth plates haven't closed, she will still grow, no matter how many years she's had her period. And there may be hormonal interventions they can make if necessary.

Not everyone follows that period plus two years growth pattern. My daughter has had her period for almost 4 years and has continued to grow, although a lot more slowly than she did when she was younger. I think she's about 5'6" now at age 15, and I'm pretty sure she's done, although we won't really know that until her next check-up.

Are there short people on both sides of your family? The genetics of height can be really complicated!

Thank you to everyone for all of the input, responses, and suggestions. I have talked to a doctor about her and they did an xray of her hand and told me that her bone age was right with her age but nobody ever explained the results completely to me. I don't know if her growth plates are closed or not. I have made an appointment to see a doctor and I am asking them to explain it all to me. Can they tell by the hand xray if she is done growing or not? I expect her to be short but I was really hoping she would reach 5 foot. I am only 5 ft 1 in and my hubby is only 5 ft 9 in. I know she won't be tall and that is fine with us. She is a wonderful girl and is super smart and has a great personality and that is all that matters.
