10 Year old & Divorce
Fri, 08-27-2004 - 10:21am
Hi there,

I am new to this board - I am looking for advice on how to help my 10 year old cope with our divorce. My soon to be ex. keeps promising him all sorts of things like pools and trampolines in the backyard - (ex is in the middle of bankruptcy). We have been separated since July 2003 and he has only bought my 10 year old a pair of boots after I pleaded with him because I had other things to buy for winter for the other two. My 15, & 18 year old's know what their father is like so they just roll their eyes when the promises start. How do I talk to my 10 year old and try to get him to realize what is going on.

My older two sons have gone through all of the promises before and realize what is going on but the youngest one hasn't.

Any suggestions.

That's rough. We went through this type of thing last year. Now that the kids (two oldest) are with their dad (long story on how that came to be) they realize that he doesn't exactly tell the truth about having their best interests at heart.

If your 10 yo is close with his brothers, then they should be the ones to tell him what their father is really like and how he is making empty promises.

Other than that I have no advice just hugs (((mythreesons)))

Good Luck!
