Kevin tested for another stripe in his karate class yesterday ...he's currently a 2nd degree blue belt, should test for purple in Feb, Brown a year from then, and he should earn his black belt by the time he's 14 if he stays on this course.

I think this is pretty common in marial arts. When Sam and Rachel took karate, the 12 and up also trained with the adults, or in the advanced kids class. He also ran a "team", which was basically the 10+ kids who were interested in attending tournaments and training together. I have a friend who does Tai Kwon Do with her daughter, who got her black belt at about 13. She's been training with the adults, too.

Go, Kevin! It's great he's sticking with it.

I think there are a lot of things that seem to place adult status on 12 year olds - look at medications, movie tickets, car seating recommendations, etc.

Kinda OT, but that reminded me of 6 Flags tickets - 'child' is under 48". DS was over that at age 5. So he was an 'adult' at 5?! Sheesh.
