I guess even though I've been through middle school as a girl...I still don't get it -- girls are "best friends" one day and replaceable within a few days...I tell my daughter to treat everyone respectfully and kindly -- no need for labels of "best friend", etc.

Your right little girls are and can be very mean. My dd has had these problems alot. I have just let her know that I am here to listen anytime. And not to let it get to her too much. Is she "into" anything outside of school? sports of some kind. Does she have any interests? Is there something you can take her to do after school? I found that if my dd is active in something outside of school and away from those girls its easier for her to deal with when she needs to. Its is all part of growing up and its hard. There are books that you can read to help you both through this. But mostly it just takes time. If you could get her mind off of it and into some other friends outside of school it might help. Take care and let us know how its going.

There is no way for you to handle it really!

You know, I think my very first post to this board was about the exact same thing. Especially the exclusion thing.

I know I talked with her about it a lot and actually got too involved emotionally. I've since then tried not to worry so much and things have actually worked out...6th grade stunk for her, but last year was better and this year is WAY better, so far anyway.

AS others have said, unfortunately this is normal (not right, but normal) behavior and it WILL get better!

Oh the "Mama Bear" mentality is so normal!
