My 8th grader was 13 in Aug. Her school is planning a Washington DC trip for social studies...the teacher who is running the trip is doing it through a company that does these types of trip for kids...sounds good and legitimate. But, aren't they young at this age to take a trip like this? We live in Ca., so this would be far away for us. She would be gone 5 days. I've approved of her going, but I'm thinking she's young! I went to DC in high school.
I'm being a nervous mom, so need some advice as to what you would do.
It's also about $1900.00 total. I'm trying to make sure her dad pays for half, yeah right...we'll see...even though he says he will.
My DD has gotten all A's, just 1 C in middle school....so this would be a way of rewarding her good grades and of course she would learn a lot!
It would probably be a great trip, it's just the thought of letting my "baby" go so far away! There would be a total of 35 kids going.

No, I would not be OK with it, but clearly I have a different educational viewpoint than most.

I'm not thinking I would be very comfortable with this either.

It is traditional in our childrens' schools to start "overnight trips" like these as early as 6th grade.

The distance would bother me a lot.I take it they would be flying?Last year my dd 5th grade class actually went on an over night to Phildelphia, which is about 6 hrs from our house. At 10/11 that was a no brainer, there was no way I'd let my dd go.For one thing I don't think the teachers watch the kids enough. When they go on field trips they have free reign to walk around without any chaparones.I don't even let my dd walk around the mall without me tailing her yet,so to let her go to a strange city I don't know.Her6th grade class is going to D.C. this year it is a 4hr bus ride from our house.I honestly don't think we will let her go,but dh did give her a maybe, depending on which friends are allowed to go.Gab's trip would not be as much money as you dd's trip. From what you posted your dd sounds like she is mature enough to go and she seems to have a good head on her shoulders.Eighth grade is somewhat on the young side to be that far from home, but it isn't necessarly too young.Of course you would have to trust the chaparones that they would watch your dd as well if not better than you would.Gabrielle tells me that the eighth graders in her school are going to Europe,I honestly feel that going out of the country is better suited for a highschool student.I do tend to be on the overprotective side about somethings, and I probably would be more likly to say no than others would.

I've allowed my daughter to go on a couple of overnight trips with the school, and she will go on the 8th grade Washington DC trip next year.

Uh oh, I wasn't expecting everyone to be against it. I thought I was being too worried, maybe I should just trust my gut instinct and not have her go? It's hard because her dad and I can't talk about anything, let alone this trip. My DH is a little concerned, but not enough to not let her go.
If I did let her go, it will be understood that she would get very little for Xmas. Also, we hardly ever go anywhere on a family trip, so I'm wondering if I should save the money for that instead? It's hard to go too far with a 2 yo, IMO.
I'm not saying she deserves this as a reward for grades, she doesn't have to go...but she is wanting to go badly. Being a parent is too hard sometimes!

Oh, good, someone else who's letting her DD go! Where do you live? Would it be as far of a trip like it is for us?
Also, the company that's doing the trip sounds really trustworthy...they have chaperones, etc.
Our school looks at it as educational, too.
Is it common for 8th graders to be offered this trip?

Do you know how much DC will cost you? I plan on working overtime to help pay for it.

Hi there, new here.

I'm thinking that the DC trip is the norm for our area here in California.
