8th gr. Wash. DC trip?Would you do it?

My 8th grader was 13 in Aug. Her school is planning a Washington DC trip for social studies...the teacher who is running the trip is doing it through a company that does these types of trip for kids...sounds good and legitimate. But, aren't they young at this age to take a trip like this? We live in Ca., so this would be far away for us. She would be gone 5 days. I've approved of her going, but I'm thinking she's young! I went to DC in high school.
I'm being a nervous mom, so need some advice as to what you would do.
It's also about $1900.00 total. I'm trying to make sure her dad pays for half, yeah right...we'll see...even though he says he will.
My DD has gotten all A's, just 1 C in middle school....so this would be a way of rewarding her good grades and of course she would learn a lot!
It would probably be a great trip, it's just the thought of letting my "baby" go so far away! There would be a total of 35 kids going.

Her trip is in March, the deadline to register was yesterday.
"Where do you live? Would it be as far of a trip like it is for us?"
I'm in Massachusetts, so it is far, but not as far as California.
My 6th grader is 10 and we've already decided she can go in 8th grade proveded she save up 1/2 the money (which is a grand.)
Oh, we live in CA too so it's the same distance. I like how our school builds up to the trip. In 6th grade, almost all the kids go to 6th grade camp in the mountains for 5 nights. They do extra little travel trips every trimester
I went to DC in high school. It was a band trip, we had a good time.
Yeah, I wish they would have prepared us more for it!
I work in Washington, DC so I can tell you that there are lots of kids from far away places coming here for field trips. Spring & summer are the peak times, I tend to stay away from the museums (they're w/in walking distance of my office since I'm next to the White House) but all the kids wear t-shirts w/their school names so I can tell they're in a group together.
Of course my coworkers & I realize their parents don't know this but some of the skimpy clothes we see the kids dressed
I trust her to be responsible. I ordered her a shirt, too. Ca. is great, have you ever been here?
What should the weather be like in March in DC?
I would be fine with the trip in theory. I know 5 days is a long time and its far away, but they are almost in high school and I know it would be sooooo much fun and informative. I sent her to horseback riding camp for a week and she could have fallen off and broken her leg, but I had to let her go.
The issue for me would be $1900. That is ALOT of money. I am planning on taking her to NY City for 4 days in March next year and that will be the whole cost of a trip for both of us. So if it was more reasonably price, $400 I would probably go for it without thinking, but not for $2K. They need to do some fundraising.
