8th gr. Wash. DC trip?Would you do it?

My 8th grader was 13 in Aug. Her school is planning a Washington DC trip for social studies...the teacher who is running the trip is doing it through a company that does these types of trip for kids...sounds good and legitimate. But, aren't they young at this age to take a trip like this? We live in Ca., so this would be far away for us. She would be gone 5 days. I've approved of her going, but I'm thinking she's young! I went to DC in high school.
I'm being a nervous mom, so need some advice as to what you would do.
It's also about $1900.00 total. I'm trying to make sure her dad pays for half, yeah right...we'll see...even though he says he will.
My DD has gotten all A's, just 1 C in middle school....so this would be a way of rewarding her good grades and of course she would learn a lot!
It would probably be a great trip, it's just the thought of letting my "baby" go so far away! There would be a total of 35 kids going.

I'm actually in Central California, about 2 hours away from the bay.

I would let my child go if I felt comfortable with the teacher and the program.

Not sure if you saw my post a month or so ago--but we faced this same dilema!

We are in IL and our 8th grade class goes to FL(Disney) for a week---that includes travel time and will be about $1000.

March weather can be unpredictable....usually breezy & not warm yet. Probably very much like Northern CA (SF Bay area) weather except windier. Been known to snow or be hot here in March as I mentioned it can be unpredictable -- I would check the weather the week before.

I have relatives in Southern CA so have visited the West coast as well as SF. The scenery is a bit different here & the traffic is just like the LA area, LOL. I bet your dd will have a blast!

When I first read your post yesterday, I went back & forth on it. It is a really huge trip for an 8th grader, going from one coast to the other for 5 days... But I really love DC, and I think it would be *such* a great place for an 8th grader to visit; very educational and enlightening. If you think she's mature enough to actually appreciate the history and the whole educational aspect of the trip, and if you do not think there is any way you'll be getting there as a family in the near future, I think you should look at this as a fabulous opportunity for her!!

Thanks for the offer! Hopefully everything will go ok. I know it's a lot of money, but as a nurse luckily i get to work a lot of overtime!
That would be great if your son could go to Ca.
