Any kids play Runescape on the computer?

My 6th graade DS loves to play. Honestly, I don't know much about it, but quite a few of his friends play, too. It's kind of neat that when they all log on they're playing against each other. Currently DS is a "free" member, meaning that he doesn't pay a monthly fee. A couple of his friends are "paid" members ($5/month). This allows your chacter to go more places and do more things in the game.

DH and I are undecided if we want to pay for DS to become a paid member. He has great grades, so that really isn't a concern, and $5 isn't much every month.

I'm just looking for some feedback from parents whose kids play the game and see what you think about the membership.

Thanks for your input.

Yes, both of my kids play and are members. However I will add that they PAID us for 6 months in advance from their own money, and it gets charged to our credit card. My 15 yr old son was actually asked to be a moderator (before he was a memeber) because he's really great at helping others within the game.

My 12 yr old daughter was actually convinced to give her IM ID to someone who swore he'd give her cheat codes, but then turned out to be a predator, so please be careful. Luckily I was right there and caught the activity and it was a huge lesson for her that fortunately turned into a great conversation between us instead of something much worse. She now will not IM with anyone she hasn't already met face to face!

The game is great fun for both, but for now they're limited to one hour each on school days or I'd never see them again!

My DS plays and is a member, comes out of his allowance every month. He really enjoys it and I come up every so often to check up on things. One time he had his acct hacked but I was able to get it back for him but not before they took most of his stuff. And then I set up the recovery questions for him and check every so often to see if he accidentally gave out his info. It hasn't happened since.

A lot of his friends get on too. I just monitor him and make sure of what he is doing and he actually calls me over to show me things he is doing.

My youngest son Brandon plays. And I do too! LOL! I wanted to see what the game was like, and secretly I love video games. I try and play when Brandon's playing and he protects my character, which is funny! One time another player came to attack me and Brandon was defending me and told the other player that I was his mom! LOL! The other player just said, "that's your mom, weird" LOL!

I think it's a fun game but I'm not nearly as addicted as the kids are. Brandon uses his allowance to be a member but I'm still in the free account. You get more options as a member and more strength I guess. Plus you can go to new worlds. It's really cool how you can meet up with your friends in the game and follow them around. Plus it's a form of online chat. It's also a great tool for me as a parent, because all I have to do is threaten that Runescape will be taken away if things aren't done...and amazingly, all chores and homework are done! LOL!

That's what allowance is for. Ds pays us each month for his game memberships.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I think we'll go ahead and get him signed up as a member, but we'll have to decide who pays for it. We may split it to begin with and if it's something he wants to continue, he'll have to fork over the dough. Thanks again!

My daughter doesn't play Runescape, but she plays Maple Story and ToonTown - both are pay by month MMOG's. (err, massive multi-player online games) She has friends that play Runescape as well, but it's one she's never gotten into.

I think as long as he maintains his grades, doesn't spend all his freetime on the game, and keeps up with his real life friends and you can afford the 5 bucks, go for it. Honestly, if you pay him an allowance, you could even have him pay the monthly (:

Online games are a fun way to meet people without any of the visual preconceptions we all have - even kids.

My biggest suggestion is that you keep an eye on who he's talking to, and I'm sure you do that already anyway.
