Anyone else's kids into musicals?

First it was the lion king, then phantom, then grease and now it appears to be Rent. They still watch phantom and grease and they have the music for both on their MP3 players but they have added some of the rent music as well. They watched the movie again tonight. The topic is pretty mature but they love it. Oops we also took them to see Wicked a few years ago so they have a few songs from that on their MP3 players too. Soon that is all that will be on there is show tunes.
Doesn't anyone else think this is a little odd because i do.
OT but Tegan is going to see the theatre production of To kill a mockingbird....definitely not a musical but she is so excited. She loved the book when she read it last year so she is thrilled to be going to see it. Tegan recommended the book to her BF and she finally got around to reading it this summer. Well her mom called and asked if she could take Tegan with them when they go to see it.

My girls LOVE musicals too.
Yes and I don't see it as odd. I grew up in theatre, it was my major in college and worked as a stage manager professionally for a good 10 years. I loved musicals from about 8-years-old and still do (though I must admit, I'm too old for "Rent." I watched the movie and thought "dude, get a job and PAY that rent!") Both my kids love musicals and my DD is now heavily involved in performance these days. She and her theatre friends know them all and certainly their MP3 players are recycling old shows too.
It's really natural for teens to love theatre. These days, there are so many with really "cool" music as opposed to the old Rogers and Hammerstien (though I personally love those too.) I'm convinced that teens do Shakespeare better than adults. Learning Shakespeare is like unlocking a secret language and teens get really excited when they first discover this. They have the ability to say all the words but still act like modern people. They don't try too hard as adults often do and thus, their performances are engaging and understandable.
Is your DD interested in performance? If so, I'd hunt down a youth theatre for her. She may love it. She doesn't even have to act, she may love all the backstage stuff like I did. Theatre kids are a nice group too. The group DD's in ranges from 8 to 18. The kids are tremendously supportive, extremely accepting, smart, responsible. I crack up everytime I'm there. They are respectful but they talk to adults as equals and their lives seem to be open books lol.
It's certainly worth taking the kids to some shows. Check out the local community theatres. A lot of tiny, volunteer-based theatres pump out some high quality stuff. It's the only place to see the old classics as the pros focus heavily on new shows. Plus, tickets are a fraction of the price. Go to some of the highschool or junior college performances. Introduce her to some classic playwrites.... I read countless plays in my youth.
Connor is majorly into musicals. Rent and Wicked are his top picks right now.
Music is huge in Connor's life though. He sings in two choirs at school (one is competative) is auditioning for all city and all state, has performed in 2 music festivals and will again this year as well. He also plays guitar and has been asked to head up a teen worship team at our church.
There is a fairly large musical following amoung the students thought. Most of them are music kids anyway, though a few are drama kids.
