I posted several weeks ago about our AR program and the problems I had with it because they wer not taking content into consideration at all. Thanks to Karin Gab and I browsed the book stores, and I used the AR site she gave me and we found several books that Gab could read at 6.0 or above. The school librian ordered the test Gabby wanted. Then Gab comes home from school and tells me that it is all changing and the have to read based on the results of the STAR test, and that tehy better improve each 9 weeks and that her teacher told her she did really well on the test. All I could think was great I'll have a heck of a time finding books higher than 6th grade level>i put a call into the teacher to see what was up.I was actully pleasentlt surprised. The range in which they can read books was very large. For the first 9 weeks Gabby could read any thing from a 4.9-11.6,so as you see she will have a large selection of books. She still has to take the test for the next 9 weeks, but I did tell the teacher I don't know how much higher the high level is going o go.Plus I'm not really sure how accurate the test really is and how consistent the results are.Anyway Gab only has to read 2 outside novels per nine weeks and she is thrilled, because a lot of books she wanted to read are in the 5. catagory.I know I did not complain, but a lot of people must have, based on content of books,so the change is for the better.Gabby did actually start reading Stardust for the next nine weeks, but she is taking her time on it,so she does not complete it until then. She absoulty loves the book!I guess a lot of people had trouble finding books, because the teacher actually droped the number of points needed from 10 to 6.Gabby did ave all her points, but I'm guessing mos of the sixth grade did not.Anyway, thanks Karin for the Web sight and your help suggesting books for us.

So glad it all worked out for your DD!!

I think by giving kids the wider range it will help them find books that they are interested in.

Thanks! I guess i was so concerned, because dd always enjoyed reading and limiting her because of a reading level was really turning her off of reading.I want her to love reading and to read because she likes it not because she has too.I really don't oject to her reading a higher level book if she is interested, but it is kind of silly to tell her she isn't able to read the vast majority of books sold in Barnes and Noble. The teacher was actually very nice when I talked to her and she kept telling me the old rules wern't her idea.
