An online friend wrote this, it pretty well sums up how I feel!

The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.

So nice to hear someone say the same things that go through my head. I do draw the line at teenagers without a costume (I mean, come on, put some effort into it), but even then I give in and give them candy! Oldest is going to party this year to avoid people with candy issues. Hubs and I decided we're just gonna make a bag for him. We're already thinking of buying "replacement candy" for Liss (she has braces) and replacing all the stuff like gum, taffy, etc. Seems only right = ALTHOUGH.....My girlfriend does an exchange with her kids - they can take 20 pieces Halloween night and then she trades the rest of the candy for book cards to their local bookstore. I might try that this year. No one here needs that much candy!

I so agree!!!

I also just read a Q&A small article in a ladies magazine last night (Woman's Day maybe) about how old is too old to T or T and the psychologist said Let THem! As long as they are not out being destructive, then let them go. The point was made that kids are forced to grow up early all the time, and they should be allowed to have some fun and go trick or treating if they wish.

I love it when the older kids come to our house. We typically have quite a few Jr/HS kids! It is fun to see their creativity and costumes (or lack there of-LOL) as opposed to the cute little ones that Momma dresses up!

If they want to T&T, and they aren't causing trouble (pestering little kids) then let them. There was 1 7th grader last year who dressed up as Napoleon Dynamite, that was a creative costume.

The city I live in says no T&T'ing after age 12. Dd is only 12, but isn't going this year (and I got a little flack for this as well). She plays violin, and her lesson is on Tues night. The school isn't cancelling lessons (though many dance schools close for that night). She's going to have to make up 4 lessons this year as it is b/c she's got concerts at school and the community orchestra she plays in. Her violin teacher's pregnant, and so dd's going to have 2 more lessons (when she goes on maternity leave) to make up.

And then we found out last week that for her Christmas recital- her teacher has many of her students play in this community Christmas celebration. It's not that big of a deal- but dd has never done a duet with another child, so she needs as much practice as possible to learn the 5 Christmas songs she'll be playing.

I am making it up for her. I told her after her lesson on Tues- I'd take her to DQ (it's on the way home) and she can choose any kind Blizzard that she wants. Her little sister's going to bring home MORE than enough candy between school and T&T ing, so there's no reason the two of them can't share.
