DYK Thread for August

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Yeah..free!

I still would love to know how public schools can charge instructional fees & such. Doesn't make sense to me.

I do know that Louisiana is one of the states that has free textbooks--not all states have free textbooks. But Huey P. Long is the reason for Louisiana (all students...public or private) students not having to pay to use textbooks--they can be charged if they lose or damage a textbook, though.

When did they get their teeth?

Aly got her first tooth at 13 months old, then didn't lose her first until she started first grade at 6-1/2. She's 12-1/2 and still has 5 baby teeth.

Pa has free text books too.Although the only actual text book Gabby was allowed to keep in her locker last year was her math txt book. The other txtbooks stayed in class.Although we could access the reading and math book online. Not really sure if they had a S/S or science book, since they got tons of study guides from those classes. When they read novels they do get

Texas has free textbooks, we also have to pay to replace any lost or damaged books. In m/s they actually got two sets, one to keep in the classrooms and one to keep at home so they didn't have to transport books back and forth to school. I wish they did it in high school too, but I can see why they don't.

My first day back was sooooo loooooong!!! We had meetings from 8 until after 3 with a half-hour lunch and a 15 minute break all day!

Tomorrow, we have meetings until 12:30..lunch, then work in our rooms prepping for Open House while some have meetings to attend. As of right now, I don't have any meetings to attend, but I'm on two major committees this year (one ends in October), so if we can meet for either of those, I'm sure we will.

What iuf someone could not afford the fee.Other than taxes,I did not think you had to pay to go to a public school, since every child is intitialed to an education.Sports and yearbooks ae extraS.When Gab was in the school play we had to pay $65,but $45 if that was in ads so technacially we could have sold the ads and not paid the $45 ourselves.

No, we have to set up our classroom BEFORE school starts. It has to be completely set up before Open House, and the administration comes in to inspect. We don't get paid to set up our classroom, that's on our own time.

I got access to Aly's schedule (and all the other 7th graders' schedules) last week when I attended the Powerschool workshop. We just went online with schedules & grades, but parents won't have access until January--we have to get comfortable with it first, and they have to work out all the kinks.

If she weren't in my class, I would have had to get her schedule from one of her teachers or from the office as I don't have access to any other grade's schedules.
