DYK Thread for August

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

DYK

Our guys lost their football game today. (really really lost!)

The girls didn't cheer very well either.

I was very frustrated.

After the game we went school shopping.

Alexis actually has $$ left! (They each had a budget) She has some things she wants to order online though.

Caleb started off slowly but quickly found what he needed and his $$ is all gone.

Now I have to clean out Caleb's closet and dresser.

It hasn't gone live for parents yet...we JUST got the system...they already had to upgrade the network because it already bogged it down.

When it finally works...I will LOVE it...instead of doing 3 things, I will do just ONE. The problem is--it doesn't work like it's designed to.

What worked for the "practice" stuff at our workshop is not working for the actual teachers. We were able to show a report of grades for a class...like we now are required to print every week. Well, now that we have our own log-in, when you go to print the report, only the final grade is showing up in the report...you can't see the individual grades. Issues with attendance not working like it should, too.

It's been a nightmare!!

Good Sunday morning ladies!

DYK- Today while Kass is still at my parents, I'm going through all her dresser drawers and cleaning things out, and the top of her closet.

I think it took our districts teachers a full semester or more to figure it out.

Hope it doesn't drive you batty in the mean time!

It's not the teachers that need to figure it out..lol.

I love the system when we did the practice workshop--but it was all working on the practice log-in. They need to figure out how to fix the problems, so it works for the teachers now.

Thank goodness they didn't make it live for parents right away because we (the teachers) would look like idiots, but it's the system that's not working.

Do you know what system your school is using. Our school uses ed-line.This year they are actually using it at the elem level too.I will say that it is only as good as the teacher. We can get updates by 5pm every Friday. However, some teachers will only update their part of it at the midterm then at the end of the 9 weeks,so we really don't know anything anyway.I do like it because some time a teacher may accidently forget to put something in her book and Gab or I catch it and Gab will get it corrected before report cards and such.

We're using Pearson Powerschool.

Grades can only be put in when they're actually graded, so while I get most of my stuff back to students within a day or two, lab reports take up to 9 hours to grade, so that can take a week for some classes (I try to stagger the class order in which I grade them because I usually do one stack a night, so 1st hour might get it the next day the first time and 6th hour might get it the next day the next time we do a lab report). English teachers have the same problem with grading essays. Actually, I know an English teacher that took personal days off to grade essays because she was so bogged down with getting them graded. People don't realize that essays & lab reports aren't scan-tron and require teachers to take personal family time to get them graded.

We are required to print a hard copy of the grades we have entered every Friday. That's where yesterday's big headache was. I had 2 teachers come in my room while I was teaching to ask me to help them figure out why they couldn't print out their grades. Came to ME..why me??? I am so far from being the technology expert!! But even when I tried, when you click to print ALL assignments, it still only prints out the final grade, not the individual assignments. But when we did the practice one at the workshop, it did what it was supposed to do.

Most of the test Gabby gets have to be graded by hand, even in math.Lab reports and essays can take awhile to grade though. As for your gradesand stuff on line the teachers can only be as good as the tech people who download the stuff into the computers.Gabby is always bringing home passwords and stuff so we can get txt books,or certain files on line. Then when I try to get this stuff I always end up with some currupt file message. Then Gab has to go to her teacher then the teacher has to go to the tech people to correct the problem. They actually changed the format of our ed-line it was easier to move around before, but I a sure once I am used to the new format it will be just as easy.
