DYK Thread for August
**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**
DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know
It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Math has to be graded by hand because you have to grade the work, too...not just the answer. I used to have my math tests back to all students within 2 days.
I can't think of anything else I do in science, besides lab reports, that takes more than one day to grade. However, sometimes I will accidentally leave the work at school and I'm not driving back to get it..that's why I tell the students 1-2 days. Plus, if I have a lot of make-ups, then I can't give them back their graded work yet anyway.
I don't have enough scan-trons to do all of my tests, and I grade all of my pre-tests by hand. Some teachers buy their own scan-trons just to keep from having to grade them at home. I'm not to that point financially yet..but when I get there, I'm sure I'll be there, too!
I was going to do my warm-ups through Sept this weekend, but when I was looking at last year's, I saw a gap (from Gustav) and realized Bill and Ana are heading this way....maybe I should just wait!!! I'm hoping they both just fizzle out in the Atlantic and not mess with anybody.
We don't have any textbooks online, but when you look at the cost of the textbooks (not to mention the weight of them...yes, I know our kids only have to CARRY them twice...once home from school in August, and once back to school in May, but they are HEAVY!!!!), I really wish they would opt that way. I think California is heading in that direction (all online textbooks) or maybe already there!
We're finally getting wireless in our schools, and we'll have access to a mobile laptop lab (yes, more training this Wed!), in which we can schedule to use laptops in our classroom. But we only have one set of laptops. It's like using the computer lab...only one class can go in per day if they're using it all day. So, basically this is adding a second lab to our school. Well, a third lab, but one is a designated lab and can't be used for classes.
Our students bring home a set to keep at home for the year. This varies by school. Aly's elementary school did not have this.
The first time I had ever heard of this was when I was in high school, the middle school started doing this (my step-sister was still in middle school).
Yes, I'm pretty sure the schools have to pay a fee to use textbooks online. As you had said earlier, Gab would come home with a code that wouldn't work, that seemed to be district-specific (or maybe even school-specific), so they probably have to pay for that code.

The middle and high school in our district use Edline too.
