bedtime routine/bedtime?

Hi everyone, I've been reading for a while and decided to post. I have a 13 son and recently we have decided to let him choose his bedtime, as long as it was before 10 or 10:30. Well, of course he is pushing it to 10:30 every night and is tired in the AM and its making me rethink how much sleep he needs. He also wants to take his shower at 10:20 and get ready for bed in the last 10 minutes before bedtime---which is just crazy because my husband and I go to bed at 10:30. So we make him get ready for bed earlier now---which he doesn't like of course.

Do your kids still have a nighttime routine at this age or do you let yours choose their own schedule (shower, PJ's, etc.)?

What is a "reasonable" bedtime for a 13-year-old who needs to get up and be at the bus stop at 7:15 am?

Welcome to the board!

My ten-year-old has to be ready for 6:45, so she goes to sleep by 8:30 & is up @ 6.

Thanks to Kelly (mom2emsopmax) for my beautiful siggy! Photobucket

My 13 yr old would stay up until midnight at least if I let him. As it is, I try to make him go to bed at 10:00 but I'll hear him walking around much later. He only has to brush his teeth and get into bed,so that should only take 5 minutes. I have to remind him to shower (I don't know what he has against being clean, lol) but I will make him take it much earlier cause that would be another excuse for pushing the bedtime to be later. As it is, even if I get him into bed early, he doesn't fall asleep. I used to think that he was purposely not wanting to go to sleep until I did and waiting up for me. The bedrooms are upstairs and he didn't like being up there alone. I usually go to bed between 11;00 and 11:30. I don't like this struggle now because in 9th grade, he'll have to get the bus at 6:45, an hour earlier than now.

My almost 13 yo is in bed by 9:30 nightly. He has to be up at 6:30 to get ready for school.

Welcome to the board!! :)

I have 3 younger kids, and my oldest is 10. They all have to be in bed between 8 and 8:30 on school nights. I'm a little more lax with the 10 year-old, but not much. I let him read in bed for about 20 minutes or so. He's notorious about pushing the limits of bedtime (always has been), so often he is not asleep until closer to 9:30, which is not good. He's never been a great sleeper.

I realize this doesn't help you much since your DS is 13.
