When I was younger (about 11/12), we used to have a source for the not quite safe and sane fireworks and thought it was a blast to shoot off the firecrackers, bottle rockets and roman candles.

DH lets Matthew do stuff I don't consider 'safe and sane', even though the year we met ('88) he held a roman candle and ended up in the ER with 3rd degree burns from it blowing up in his hand... DS is allowed to light bottle rockets and some other things (those little chickens and tanks and other roman candle type things), but then must move away FAST, or I wouldn't let him do that much. I still like the 5th of July when it's all over...I hate all that cringing I do at my SIL's on the 4th every year!

I grew up with bottle rockets, roman candles and the like and never had a problem with them so I don't fear them.

I never let my kids fire off anything, Sparklers can burn at 1400 degrees! We go to the fireworks show. When we go up to the cabin, dh will buy stuff and let dd now try lighting some tame stuff, but I won't allow anything more than a bottle rocket. There is no one near the cabin, so we are not disturbing people. My kids know that they are not allowed to handle any fireworks, sparklers etc... without us. Dd was at a party last year and tehy had sparklers, and she decined one.

Isn't it nice when we get proof that they're actually listening from time to time?
