Bummer! Just heard Ds and friend

talking in the other room. The Polar Express was on and I heard the friend say "you know Santa's not real". My Ds age 9 said "Yeah, I know". Actually I am pretty sure he DIDN'T know but didn't want to admit that to his friend. I went in a few minutes later and it came up again. The friend said "Santa's not real. My Mom and Dad admitted it to me". I caught his eye and shook my head and put my finger to my lips. Then he said "It's o.k. Austin already knows". Austin said "yeah, Mom, I hear you and Dad". Now I know that is not true because he has always been sound asleep and he believed last week! I said "Well, I believe in Santa. He is the symbol of unselfish giving. If you don't believe you won't receive!"

The friend is a really nice kid and wasn't trying to be mean or anything. Just a lack of good judgement of keeping a secret quiet.

Oh well, I knew it was coming, I just feeling really sad right now. I guess that it is just another fun and lovely part of childhood that is gone forever now!

yes, Santa will continue to come as usual. He did at my house until my last pre-marriage Christmas and I was 23! Austin just seemed like it was no biggie-like he already knew-but I am waiting for him to bring it up to me again when the friend isn't around. Just bummed me out, not the way I wanted it to go. Oh well!
But if he doesn't bring it up again soon, I think I will since I don't want him to give the news to any other unsuspecting children (and parents) especially siince he has younger cousins.

well, I did try a bit of the Santa 'concealment'. I said "wow-Santa brings some pretty big gifts and I don't spend money like that". (All big gifts come from Santa around here). Austin said "Oh yeah, Andrew got a cell phone and an Ipod last year". Then I launched into my "If you don't believe you won't receive" and quickly got them onto another subject. I am better this morning about it-I knew it could only last for a short time and my boys are growing up-just bummed that it happened like this.

I think my oldest flat out asked me sometime around 5th grade. We took a neighborhood walk to get away from his younger sister and I explained the story of St. Nick and his giving small gifts to poor children in their shoes...something like that. Anyway, I explained about the 'fun' of the secret and now that he was old enough to know, that he was old enough to be in on the fun and NOT tell other kids. Santa has always brought the one big gift, and once my younger child started hinting that she knew the truth I just winked and told HER "Once you say you no longer believe, he stops coming!". So both my kids know but still act the part! I'll aske them what they hope "Santa" will bring this year and they'll play along. It's all in fun and part of the sparkle of the holiday!

I agree. That's how it happened with my oldest one. He asked, I told him, but swore me to secrecy with a younger brother, cousins, and friends that may not work. It worked out fine.

Thanks-I was pretty bummed but feeling o.k. about it now. He hasn't mentioned it again this weekend. We will talk about it soon. But no matter, we will continue as usual, like my parents did, with no changes in the Santa Routine or what he brings.

I'm sorry! That's so tough to accept. The magic for Santa in this house was gone last year. At first I was disappointed to give it up but this year I told dh that at least we can use last year's wrapping paper now! (I used to make sure that all xmas paper was different each year. ) Anyway, big big (((hugs))) to you!
