There will be custom duties that the recipient will have to pay the post office when they get it. As far as how much the shipping will be would depend on weight , distance etc. and the post office will charge more because it is international.
There is not necessarily duty on the item. It depends what it is and the value. Your cheapest method of shipping will be just by regular parcel post. The most expensive is UPS or Fed Ex. They MIGHT have to pay tax on it at this end, they might not. I have ordered tons of stuff form the US and never had to pay tax or duty. But this time I ordered my cat drugs ($107) and the company put on the customs sticker (cat vitamins $16.50) and customs was suspicious so the opened it and found the original invoice and charged me 15% tax (provincial and federal) but there was no customs duty on that particular product.
I would just tell who's ever interested that you will send it by regular parcel post (takes longer) and that they have to be prepared to pay any tax on it that Canada Customs decides. They might not look at it all or they might. Its random, they can't examine the billion pieces of mail that cross the border everyday. But I buy from e-bay in the US, and Amazon and other companies. I've never had any problems.
