A Career Poll

I am curious to know what kind of job everyone has. Do you work outside of the home? Do you work part time or full time? Do you like your job? How long have you been doing your job?

I will tell you about myself...I am a part-time RN, I usually work 2-3 evenings a week. I work with babies and sometimes older kids.
I like my job, but it can be emotionally draining...and physically draining as well. I have been a nurse for 18 years now. I like my flexible schedule. I like helping the patients and their families...but sometimes I find it stressful.

BTW: I'm not trying to start the debate of "what's better": working outside the home or being a SAHM. I know all of us work, because we have kids!! :) I am just wondering what careers we all have.

Kim

I love being a teacher! But I fought really hard to get there because I knew I would. My schedule works well with Aly's schedule. I make twice as much money as I did before Aly was born when I worked in a full-time job. It's very rewarding...I love the kids! And I love the rapport with the faculty & staff at my school. I've only "really" taught at this school, but I student-taught at another school. Even though that school was EXCELLENT and I wouldn't hesitate to have my child there, the rapport wasn't there for me (maybe it was just because I was an "outsider"..just a student teacher..I don't know).

I really admire teachers! I wanted to be one when I was in grade school, but in high school I decided to become a nurse, after my father encouraged me. I think teachers deserve MUCH higher pay and more respect than they get. Luckily, where I live, nurses get the most pay out of all the U.S...but our living expenses are very high.
Once my kids started school, I realized how hard it must be to be a teacher. I volunteered a lot, and still volunteer as much as i can.
I don't know if you mentioned, what grade do you teach?

What kind of degree are you getting? What kind of job will you have after you graduate?

I agree, some women want to work outside of the home, but some women have to for the income...especially single moms. I have no problem with SAHM's if it is affordable for them.
I am happy with working just part time and making a decent wage.

I never wanted to be a teacher until I theoretically was one (I homeschooled Aly through preschool--of course, she was an easy student--she started reading at 3! and didn't give me any lip at that time--she wouldn't be an easy student today..lol). Then, I started looking into it. I became a preschool teacher (uncertified) when she was in K, then started college halfway through that year.

Thank you for your kind comments.

I don't have a problem with the pay (it's more than double what it was when I was in high school though), but I won't be able to retire until I'm at least 60 because I started teaching at 30, where most start at 22 and can retire at 52.

Now nurses do get paid a LOT more than we do, but I don't have a problem with that--I could NEVER be a nurse! Those are the 2 things my grandma (who paid for my college the first time around) wanted me to be.

I didn't know how much they made until one came talk to my students about her career last May.

I currently teach 6th grade, but that may change today. (probably won't, though) I'm certified 1st-8th, and highly qualified 1st-5th (all subjects) and 6th-8th math, science, & social studies. My first year, I taught 7th grade math (while the teacher was on sabbatical) and last year and probably this year, I taught/will teach 6th grade study skills which is a curriculum enrichment. I have all students except the very lowest, and I teach higher-level activities of all the core subjects (math, science, social studies, & reading/English).

I am a home daycare provider. I do enjoy my job. I love kids and I love watching them grow and learn and change. I am currently doing this full time, but have done part time in the past. I've been doing child care (either as an infant/toddler teacher in a child care center, as a nanny, in home care, respite care etc..) for 23 years.

I am an office manager for a local oil company. I really like what I do. I work from 8:00-4:30 M-F. I have been at this company for almost 5 years. I worked for another company doing the same thing for 3 years.

However, I often wish I had chosen something in the school system so I would be home in the summer and off during other breaks during the school year.
