We gave him a Tracphone, it is one of the pay as you go ones. He is starting football in a few weeks, joining choir, working on the school paper and in the play. His sister is busy too, so we put her on our regular cell phone plan and gave him her old phone. We got dd a pink razor, so she is too happy with that. She has had a cell phone for 4 years and never has abused it. Since I work 20 hours, volunteer in school and scouts and dh does scouts and works too, we need to keep in touch. Ds has been asking for a phone for a long time already, lol.

DD got a pink razr too. She is also delighted. Hopefully he won't abuse it either. My DD has been really good with hers.

I was very against the cellphone at first. Now I know it is just part of these times. We can't compare our childhoods to theirs. So I would be lost if my son, who hardly used it this summer, but need it during school; didn't have his!

I think cell phones are important when your kids become active.

You said, We can't compare our childhoods to theirs. That is so true and yet we do. :)

But here's the thing. I was just as active, if not more, than my children are these days. And we had no cell phones. My 11 yo DD wants one, and I have told her no time and time again. There isn't a moment in her day when she is without access to a phone, or is without an adult who knows where she is at all times. The electronic age is completely taking over our children's lives, in my opinion. I'm not complaining, but I don't think I was ever in the house as much as my DD is. You couldn't KEEP me inside when I was younger. I can't get my DD to go outside. Too much electronic exposure. Now they view it as a necessity rather than a luxury.

I agree with ya. Electronics are becoming a necessity rather than a luxury. My dd is getting ready to go to overnight camp. No cells/No ipods!!! What will she do?

We have the no texting rule too. My kids go away to camp without electronic and just back from camping with out much in electronics, they had Gameboys for the car ride. I just can't be everywhere. If dd is walking the 2 miles home from school, ds is stuck later in football practice and then we know about it. I can't imagine not having them.
