A close call for one of our kittens!

This happened last night, but I stil wanted to tell you guys about it. We have 4 miniature dachshunds and breed them, we also have 2 young kittens. OK, we had just wormed the kittens day before yesterday so we are keeping them out on the deck where they are purr-fectly happy with their food and water and litter box. We can only let the dachshunds out to run after dark because of our stupid neighbors (that's a whole 'nother book that I may share with you someday). So last night I looked out on the deck with the light on and the two kittens, Lars and Oreo, are sitting quietly by the sliding glass door. I walk through the living room, down the hall and out to the dachshund's pen and let them out. Well, in the time it took me to do that, Oreo had exited the deck! I heard T-Bone yelping and stuff and I knew that was the sound he made when he was chasing something (rabbits, squirrels, etc.). I get back in the house, get the flashlight and I just know that he has one of the kittens. I follow the noise down to the bottom deck and there Buddy had Oreo in his mouth, shaking her. They don't know any better, the kittens are new and the dachshunds were bred to hunt, what do you expect? So I got Buddy to drop her and picked her up. She was not shaking, not meowing, nothing...but she was alive. I brought her in the house and get this, washed her off in the bathroom sink, under running water mind you, and she was alert, but not saying a word. After the fact, I am thinking she was in shock and so was I. Anyway, I wash and dry her off, hold her for a long time, and finally put her and Lars in the

Wow, close call. Animals just go on instinct sometimes. They forget who is family. Glad everyone was okay. I'm dying to know how your cat got the name Lars though. LOL

Thanks for your concern, Tam!

We went to one of AJ's classmates houses to get me a kitten for Mother's Day. She had 6 to choolse from and I picked out a black and white female, and meanwhile AJ was holding a gray and white male the he liked. Needless to say and much to my DH's chagrin, we left with both kittens. We were trying to think of names for them that went together like Bonnie & Clyde, etc, but couldn't agree on anything. Finally I just named my girl Oreo Cookie because she is black and white (duh), and AJ is into skateboarding and classic rock/heavy metal, so he ended up naming his male Lars. On the cartoon 'Rocket Power', one of the characters is named Lars, and Lars is also the name of the drummer in Metallica. I met him on the Monsters of Rock tour way-back-when! We had all-access backstage passes to the concert in Indy.

Anyway, that's how Lars got his name!

Thank you, everyone, for your postings re: Oreo, she must be one tough kitty to take on 4 dachshunds at once!

We had kittens when I was growing up, too, when I was living with my Mom and Stepdad. One of our cats had 6 kittens once, and when they were old enough to go outside we would take them out into the yard to play. We had this old wooden screen door on our back porch and I was holding it open for the kittens and counting them as they came out. Well, I must has mis-counted or one went back in or something because I let go of the door as one of them was coming out and it got snapped in the door! The kitten was fine after the initial shock, but he never could walk a straight line after that, poor thing!
