Will turns 12 on Jan 18. Abigail will be attending President Obama's inauguration on Jan 20. She flies down (her first trip as an unaccompanied minor!) on Jan 17 and comes back the 22nd. We keep joking that the closest she'll get is looking at a huge video monitor 5 miles away. She's happy just to be down there.
She's going with the People to People student leader program. She almost said no to the invite because she didn't want to miss 3 days of school (she's very type A and hates to get behind). We set her priorities straight...hmm, let's see...3 days of catching up in algebra or missing the chance to watch history unfold.....?
I know of People to People, and know of students in this district that have done that. Aly was invited to DC, but it's not Inauguration. She had a pick of dates in the spring or summer.
No way will she even think of going without one of us, so I didn't bother. Co-worker fussed at me for it...lol. A teacher she had in 4th & 5th grade "nominated" her for it. And we STILL get stuff in the mail from them.
Yes, they're very persistent...and expensive, I might add. Abigail went with them last summer on a trip to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales and it was well worth the money, but it's not something we can do every year. The inauguration is just such a special thing that we encouraged her to go.
If Aly ever wants to do a trip with them, I have only positive things to say about the chaperones, organization, etc.

Is she going with a school group? Are they doing a tour arranged by Smithsonian?
Our school and another local school are doing tours for Inauguration. I actually gave up a free trip. But the crowd factor is NOT worth it for me.
Mike promised to take us when I would be comfortable going. So, I'm holding him to that....

Thanks. That's what my co-worker said, too.
