Hi,lurker here needs some advice. My son who is 11 weighs only 72 pounds and is 4ft 7in

tall. He is on ADD meds so I worry that the meds will decrease the little appetite he has. His doctor doesn't really see any problems but I do worry. He is in Middle school

and does have problems. Should I be concerned and is there any thing I can give him

to make him gain weight? Any advice? Thanks

That's funny you should mention a weight issue.

My DD is ADD and has been taking Adderall for about a year. Everyone kept telling us she was so thin, and I knew she had lost weight but didn't realize how much. She is now almost 5 ft tall and weighs 78 pounds. Doc says she falls below the 50 percentile in weight and she is concerned. Apparently DD now weighs a pound less than she did in June of 2000. She grew three-fourths of an inch since January of this year. Her dad is 6'4".

Doc wants us to stop by in July so they can check her height and weight. Doc mentioned maybe changing her meds to something that won't affect her appetite so much. I dread changing meds because it seems like a guessing game.

I'm glad the doc is concerned but I think it's just her body growing and changing. DD eats good and doesn't eat "junk".

My advise to you would be to find a growth chart and find your DS's height and weight to see for yourself. If your doctor hasn't kept a growth chart on your DS, take the doctor what you found.

Is your DS required to have an annual checkup for the ADD meds? If so, the doc should be able to refer to where your child was a year ago.

Good luck.

Hi, and welcome. We often are concerned that our kids fit a certain 'mold' and such, but the truth is that we are all different ... some tall, some short, some heavy, some thin ... and others are 'average.' I have an 11 1/2 y.r. that is probably 5' 1" and about 95 pounds. He also is ADHD/ODD. Meds do affect weight. What meds is he on? Kevin is currently taking 60 mg of Strattera w/ 18 mg of Concerta (which is a new med-combo for him.) His appetite hasn't changed much on Strattera. But, he's a picky eater. BOOST makes a protein drink (chocolate) that is worth pushing if you can. Just remember that despite the behavioral challenges, God has made us all 'different' ... so if your DS is small in comparison to some classmates, it doesn't mean there's anything 'wrong' ... he's just not one of the taller kids in the class.

(((HUGS))) It isn't easy. Middle school is tough. Having a kid with behavioral issues is tough. Combine the two and it can be a nervous-breakdown for a mom. But, these kids are so much tougher than we are, and they somehow manage to survive.

Just know you are NOT alone.

Hi and Welcome. If the doctor isn't concerned, then I wouldn't be either. My dd will be 11 in June and is 5 feet tall and weighs 90 pounds. She is a good bit slimmer than the other girls are. But she eats well and is healthy. I think I would only be really concerned if he were very overweight. I have a friend whose 11 year old weighs 203 pounds!

Make sure he eats good, healthy foods when he does eat and maybe even try some Pedisure or Ensure if you think he needs it!
