Different age group but you guys...

are always so helpful and make so much sense... Megan (my almost 7 yo dd) has been in a hip hop dance club at lunchtime for the last six weeks. She's having fun and she's showed me some of the dance and while she's not amazing, she's not bad. None of the moves are outright suggestive but... Here's my question. Would you let your 6 year old daughter take a hip hop dance class? The dance company that ran the club is starting a class just for the girls in the club with a recital at the end of May. I think it's a fun form of dance but I think maybe it's a little suggestive or mature for 6 & 7 year olds. She'd like to take the class and it fits into our schedule. She's in such a hurry to grow up. She'd act and dress like Hannah Montana, Lizzie Maguire, and the rest of the current teen idol crowd if I let her.

If I don't let her take the class am I being over protective? Is hip hop too "mature" for 6&7 year olds?

First thing I would do is talk to the school and ask the age of the kids who are going to be in the class. I would not put her in a multi-age class with a bunch of pre-teens and teens. I think the atmosphere would be totally different. However with a bunch of other kids her own age I would think it would be okay assuming they are making the dance moves age appropriate. I'm sure it would be great for coordination, rhythm, the usual things dance are good for. So I wouldn't rule it out, but I'd call the class organizers and let your concerns be known. If its a class of young ones and the school is aware of the fact that you don't want to "adultize" (not a word LOL) these kids then it would be okay I think.

It really depends on the dance studio. Some places seem to have no idea that the little girls look like mini prostitutes. The dance studio my daughter goes to does offer hip hop to six year olds. The girls learn a few basic dance steps, and the steps are worked into a little routine. What I have seen has looked perfectly appropriate for a six year old.

I had that same concern when some friends had their girls taking hip hop dance when Kayleigh was that age.

Quite honestly, my first gut reaction is that no I would not allow it if my child was showing signs of wanting to grow up and dress/act like a teen at the age of 6.
