Digital cameras...

Our DS will be 12 in 3 weeks. He says he wants a digital camera for his birthday. Do any of your kiddos have their own cameras? DH thinks he's too young for his own camera. Any advice? Thanks.

My son is 13 (14 in October) and he got his digital for Christmas from his Godparents. He's very responsible with it and uses it a lot. He even took it with him on the trip to NYC he took with his class (we live in New Hampshire). He's used it quite a bit for school projects as well this year and his final project also requires that the kids take photographs.

He has a basic HP camera. I think it was around $150.

I don't think 12 is too young but I wouldn't buy a $600 one either. My DD does not have her own digital camera, but she can use mine anytime she wants. She is saving her money right now for a movie camera. She needs $300 so is hoping to get some loot for her birthday as she only has $75 so far. LOL I will likely chip in some giving me rights to use it as well. But if he's fairly responsible and doesn't tend to break everything he owns I think a cheaper camera would be a fine gift. Not "too" cheap as they are useless, but a starter camera.

I actually think its a very practical gift for a 12 yr old. My daughter does have one. It holds about 52 to 69 pictures. Its great. She loves being able to take it on field trips and school functions when she can. And when we go out to different places. She get to take her pictures and we put them on the computer and print them up. Parties its wonderful she gets to keep her memories.... Think about it, there are ones out there that do not cost that much.... and do just a good job as an expensive one. You do not have to purchase the "good brand" They have some just for kids. Look around.

My daughter (12.5 years) has a Kodak Easyshare digital camera. It's reasonably priced (I think around $175), and has all the features she really needs/wants to take good photos (and videos). And it's simple to use :).

If he is responsible I'd let him have one, but maybe not go real expensive just in case.

My oldest has one and I'm thinking of giving my youngest mine and getting myself a new one. Even being responsible anything can happen. My oldest went on a School trip on a chartered bus and something leaked underneath where all the luggage was. Everything down there had something all over it.

Digital cameras are great gifts for preteens. you might be surprised at how creative they can be with cameras. one thing i like to do is encourage my teens to take very artistic pictures of themselves, maybe that don't show their whole face or is from the back or side - this way they can use these pictures in their online activities and not put themselves at risk. they use their pics when IMing friends from school or emailing their grandparents.

Thank you for all of your replies. HOnestly I don't want to spend more than $150. I know he'll get b-day money, so maybe we'll tell him we'll give him X amount toward a camera. As we shop, if what he finds costs more, he could make up the difference. We got him a cell phone for Christmas and he hasn't lost or broken it yet!!!

Shana, I'd welcome advice from your husband.

imho, it depends if the child himself is responsible.
