"All that I know is that I believe that something in people lives on after their death and if that is the case, it makes sense that a soul can get trapped here on earth for whatever reason."
I think that is kind of what I meant when I said that I believe in an afterlife. It makes sense to me too
I don't think of it as ghosts, but I know what you're referring to, and yes, I do believe, although I've only had experiences involving animals :).
After my cat died 18 years ago, I saw him running across the dining room a couple of times. My mother saw him, too.
When I moved into my current house, the first couple of weeks after I moved in, I would be in bed and I would feel a "thump" as though a cat or dog jumped on the bed, then next to me feel a "kneeding" similar to what cats do. There was nothing there. My cats were in the other room. I assumed it was a spirit of the previous owners cat. Hope he found his family :).
One of my cats passed away last month. After his death, I saw a dark form resembling him in my bedroom.
I told my mom that after she passes away NOT to visit me :).
I don't think I do. However, I am freaked out about the idea that there might be ghosts. Does that make sense? I can not watch those ghost hunter type shows because they freak me out.
I guess I just don't want to think that there are ghosts because that would be too scary.
Nope. Because I don't believe in heaven or hell or a soul it would be counter everything I believe (or don't as the case may be) to believe in ghosts. I think most can be explained through logical means and even if they can't be explained that doesn't mean its something supernatural. Before lightning was explained they thought it was the gods throwing lightening bolts, that does mean it really was just because they didn't have the means to explain it logically.

Would it be a cop-out to say that I am not sure?
Part of me doesn't want to beleive that they exist (I am so afraid of the unknown!) but the other part of me really thinks
