Actually they started bringing it up when they were very little. I know it stemmed from my being allergic to tobacco and yet my (now ex) fil would still light up right beside me and I would be forced to go to another portion of the house or outside. They live in a little trailer and only one room is heated with a wood stove, so going to another part of the house in winter was brutal. They insisted we stay with them yet he was like, my house, my rules and so what if you are allergic and not that you simply don't like it. Anyway, the kids understood this was happening at a young age and thought their grandpa was being very mean to me (and I agree). (Ya know, it wasn't like it just made me have a sneezing fit or watery eyes or anything - I have anaphalytic reactions to tobacco in all forms!!)

Later the DARE people came and talked to the schools and this started in Kindergarten. You should hear the comments my children make when they see someone drinking (at a restaurant, on tv or even their own dad - my ex). You'd think they were doing crack right there in front of them with the way they carry on. Of course, I love it that they feel this way.

I've never had to bring it up as they are always asking questions about various things they hear and that's great! I'll bet we talk about it once a month or so in some form or fashion. So the communication lines are open and I feel very lucky for that.

Ya know what's really sad? My kids (the two oldest) have already had to be put in the position of turning someone down. It was cigarettes. If it weren't for my severe allergy I'm not sure how they would feel about that. Hopefully just as strong.

They have several family members who are greatly affected by alcohol (two cousins born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and still live with the affects today - an aunt and two uncles that are alcoholics and they see them put themselves and others in danger, etc) and they have a step-uncle that died from a drug overdose. We're hoping and praying that these things along with talking about it often will help them to continuously be clean and sober. But at the same time they see their daddy (of the two oldest, not my dh who doesn't drink a drop) drink often but never get drunk and it kills me the things I hear that he says to them. For now though, they tend to believe it is all bad and I hope they continue to disagree with their dad.

Hehehe - we have had to talk with the kids about keeping their voices down too! If a smoker hears them and is glaring I just say, they are sensitive because I have severe anaphalactic reactions to tobacco. Usually they immediately put out the offending item and try to clear the air. But other than that I just try to hush them and explain the same thing you do "it's legal for them to do that even though we know it's bad for them and don't agree with it."
