I abreviated tween/teens to T's since I couldn't fit the rest in the title bar. LOL
Someone mentioned their child playing flute I think it was in the school band. I wondered if anyone else's kids play a musical instrument either through school or just taking private lessons or if they plan to.
For us band starts in Grade 7 so one more year. Kristen wants to play the tuba. Sigh. We'll see. We looked into her taking private lessons at a music school near us but she couldn't decide what she wanted to try, violin, tumpet, tuba. So we just kind of let it slide. I guess next year she'll be starting 'something'. I played clarinet in the school band for 6 years. I was no virtuoso (maybe if I'd practiced more) but I loved the experience of being in band. (We even did a 3 week tour of Europe after Grade 10, perhaps that added to the appeal. LOL) So I hope she'll stick with it for a bit.

We insisted that each of our kids take at least one year of any muscial instrument, just so they could get the experience. My son took guitar through the school in 6th grade and my daughter played the sax through the school in 5th grade. My son still picks his guitar up and is interested in taking private lessons, so we may find a way to do that. My daughter said ENOUGH..but at least she made the required effort!

Matthew has played the piano and violin in the past. He asked for Guitar lessons so I'm thinking of getting him a guitar for xmas. Dh plays the guitar so maybe that's the reason for his interest.
Brandon is playing the trumpet in the school band this year....oh help me! LOL!
So far, so good. He really enjoys it & for the most part, practices on average twice a day without being reminded. Sometimes I have to remind him. Especially when he & his friends hang out all day or if we have a busy day. (Like yesterday, he didn't practice but once & it was at 11pm last night. He stays up until midnight on Sat. so it worked out fine.)
He has a new teacher (has been to him twice). When I picked him up on Wednesday from his pratice, his teacher bragged on him. *beaming Mom alert*
He plays an acoustic guitar, but dreams of one day learning to play an electric. He has his eye on a couple of electric ones at the music shop we go to. They are expensive. He will probably have to save up for one himself. That's down the road.
I'm glad he went with learning the guitar because it's something he can take on trips, camping, to the beach, to college & play while among his friends. I've always thought that was nice when I would go to a party or cookout & someone had a guitar playing request. ("Freebird!")
My husband insists the kids learn an instrument. He can play at least five, and his siblings and nieces and nephews can all play an instrument. It is just considered an important part of their education.
I can't read a note - really.
My daughter plays the violin. She is competent, but not great. She started playing the violin in third grade. She would love to switch to a harp (we saw a fabulous harp at a concert), but it costs as much as a car. She is pretty good about practicing if I remind her. \
Kids can start orchestra as young as first grade, if they have been working with a private teacher. I think band starts at fourth grade.
Ingrid & Arden took piano for a while in kindergarden & first grade. But we had to drop it because they couldn't handle the practising on top of homework. Then last year, in fourth grade, they were able to take violin through the school. I don't think that they will continue this year, again because of the practice.

Jessica plays the clarinet in the school band.
Kayleigh plays clarinet.
