Tracy, I was in the same situation....late Oct. birthday so I started K at 4 and graduated at 17....my kids both started a year later because of the cutoff date switching.

The cut-off was Dec 31 when I started school, so even with a December birthday, I still made it...I was 4 when I started K. There were a few girls younger than me..one close friend.

When my brother started 6 years after me, the cut-off was Nov 30, but he made it with a Nov birthday. In 2nd grade, my stepmom had him held back (even though he had the grades--he did have immaturity due to ADHD even though nobody knew of ADHD until he was a teenager) so that her son would be a grade higher than him.

How silly is that. Not that there is really anything wrong with holding kids back for maturity issues, but to just randomly do it is silly.I do think a Sept 1 cut off is resonable and with what they expect of kids today, especially in kdg I can see where an older child might have an advantage over a younger child. However, eveything really depends on the child.Gabby was in kdg with a girl who just made the cut off and she really was not ready she always told the teacher she was too tired to do the worksheets. She did go to first grade with Gabby, but she begged her mom to let her go back to kdg and the second time around she was more ready and more mature. Now with so many schools having all day kdg older might be better. Is aly one of the oldest in her class?I knowshe has a Dec b'day.Gabby has a lot of friends who are 5 or 6 months older than her. However obviously you were ready at the time you started. They just expect a lot more academically out of a kdg child now.

I went to all-day K.

I was academically ready all through school, but I was definitely not mature enough to start college at 17. I didn't turn 18 until I was in finals my first semester.

There are a few girls with October & November birthdays...in fact, of her closest friends (the girls), Aly is the youngest. But in Kindergarten, in her class (not the whole Kindergarten, though), she was the oldest girl by 2 days. There were 4 boys that turned 6 before she did.

Maturity also depends on the kid.Gabby was always pretty mature for her age. When Gabby was in 1st grade the teacher actually told me that there were days she forgot Gabby was only 6.However,someone has to be the oldest or the youngest not everyone is going to fall in the middle.I do think having to go away to college at only 17 might be a little hard.

Adult maturity differs also.

I didn't go away, I commuted; and I was grounded enough (or wallflower enough..lol) to not be trapped in the pitfalls of partying/independence, etc. I just wasn't mature enough to handle adult classes (not content, but expectations...essay tests and stuff like that).

I know of a lot of people my age (regardless of being 17 or 18 or even 19) that fell into the partying lifestyle and didn't make it through college. I was lucky enough not to.

and you mentioned something else earlier (about crazy reasons for being held back).

Um, yeah, she was like that..still is.
