DYK Thread for September

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Below are some fun DYK blinkies--feel free to snag any if you like:

In a way I sort of think that's good

But maybe I'm just weird

But if you think about college and grad school (Like medical school, and then residency, which is 7 years total AFTER college, or more!!), you would be early 30's before you would be finished if you start late

Michael was 30 when he finally became an attending physician (and got a decent salary to support a family), and his birthday is April, so he wasn't that old for his class!

There are other similar professions, like law school, or getting a PhD (Although I think medicine is the worst education-wise)

Maybe I don't get it because my birthday is June, so there was no issue, but 17-turning-18 seems about right for senior in HS to me

And then you go to college the year you are 18-19

18 is when you become a legal adult, after all

Yes, kindergarten is definitely more academic now than when we were young

When I started kindergarten, I had turned 5 in June, but the funny thing was---I barely spoke any English, only Greek!!

Now THAT was tough, but my parents said I had become pretty fluent in English by Christmas time of that year

Kids learn so quickly, like little sponges!

I remind my kids of that story all the time when they complain about school, and they're sick of hearing it

Sort of like the "I walked for miles barefoot in the snow" story from some grandma, LOL!

I didn't realize you had your girls so early.

That's only a day different than ours.

Aly had a friend with an Oct 2 birthday. She was here that year (missed cut-off by 2 days), but they moved to TN the next year (military..dad's about to retire). In TN, the cut-off was later, so she actually skipped K and went straight into 1st and is the same grade as Aly.

They would be 18 instead of 17 when they graduated, 17 seems young to leave home and start college.

Gabby still says that. But she has adjusted just fine. She is still complaining about 8th grade, but she complained less yesterday and that was the start of her 3rd week.M/S just does not have the warm fuzzy feel of elem school.Plus the way they word stuff kind of makes kids who tend to "worry" stress a little more. But it all works out.Gabby does not want this year to be her last year of M/S,soit allworks out in the end.

That is a late cut-off.I think the cut-off was sometime in Oct when I went to school.Ihad aJune b'day soI started at 5.I think a lot of parents who have kids with summer b'days wait the extra year,to give their kids an academic edge and maybe an edge in sports.Plus a kid has to be pretty mature to be able to sit through all day kdg. When I was in kdg they di not teach reading until first grade and kdg was a lot more play than it was paper on pencil stuff a lot of kids can not sit still that long. Its just an individual choice. My SIL waited with my niece because she had a late Aug b'day and she thrived in school. She now goes to Penn State I think being 19 instead of 18 when she started gave her the extra year of maturity.

I kind of figure in the big picture whats one year?If you aren't ready to sit still and learn at age 5 why should you be forced to sit in a chair and do that. That said if you are ready at 5 parents should not feel that they have to hold their child back if they meet the cut-off.Gab has a March b'day so it was never an issue and with Gabby's personality I doubt I would have waited, but I do think I'd perfer my child be one of the older ones in the class instead one of the younger ones.
