DYK Thread for September

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Below are some fun DYK blinkies--feel free to snag any if you like:

Had a test today plus LOADS of make-ups (the absences have been atrocious...worse than usual and this school is bad for attendance). Just found my way out of the paperwork a couple hours ago. Created my lab reports that I need to make copies of tomorrow (since I have duty on Friday and I need them for Monday morning).

Tomorrow night, hopefully I'll wipe out my lesson plans and be able to create whatever else I need for next week so I can have a mostly school-free weekend (will still have to grade more make-up quizzes and tests).

Had a great hour with co-workers at Mexican restaurant (and some really good food!) this afternoon. Found out that a co-worker (though she's not at my school anymore) will be moving to Seattle next year.

I don't really understand why kindergarten has gotten so academic

When we were young, you learned to read and write in first grade, not kindergarten

And then it also seems as if so many high schools are NOT as academic as they were when we were young, but I could be wrong about that

I just base that on what I see with my nieces and nephews

Some of their high school friends on FB can barely write correctly

Maybe they just learned to write too young?? ;) J/K

Also, in elementary school, there is so much emphasis on reading and writing, and not nearly as much emphasis on math and science, at least here

Matthew is not a reader, but he's brilliant in math; yet it took the school system until he was in 5th grade to put him in the TAG Program

All kids have different kinds of intelligence, and I wish the diversity was recognized more by the school system

Some kids are not verbal and are not good with written language, but are amazing in other areas, and yet they are usually not considered the "bright" ones

It's the ones who read/write at a high school level in 4th grade that are considered the brightest

But maybe that is just here. . . ??

Today was Tessa and Jenna's 6th birthday

They are my miracle babies, because I almost lost them to pre-term labor at 24 weeks!

I had classes this afternoon, but I brought store-bought cupcakes in to their classroom this morning

No more homemade stuff now that I'm in school :(

Come to find out, we are supposed to only bring "healthy" snacks for birthdays with this teacher

I think that's a bit ridiculous

Like Michael said "What's a little cake going to hurt a kid once in a while?"
