ya, Jordyn's "counts" this year. She has to pass all the tests to advance to 9th grade.

I kind of figured that's how it works for most of the general population. We got an email twice in the last week stressing no phones or camera at school, or they have to be turned off and in their locker or they'll be confiscated. And that the students will have all the way til 6 at night to finish, just to make sure if your student might take that long, to know to have a ride home for them.

4th & 8th grade are the years that the LEAP *count* here. As far as elementary/middle. High school is a little different, they have a 2-year test they need to pass (I was in the first class that HAD to pass it to graduate in 1992).

I think LEAP has only been around for 8 years.

Anyway, 4th & 8th, they can have straight As in their classes, but if they fail math or language arts, they have to re-take the test (the failed part) & pass it over the summer or repeat the grade. However, if they pass the test, they can't be held back on grades (I think they can on absences..I think truancy trumps all), so they move on with remediation services.

The other grades that take iLEAP, 3, 5, 6, 7, & 9 aren't so "high-stakes". If they fail iLEAP in math or language arts OR fail its complementary course (math, or reading or English), then they have to pass the placement test to pass the subject. If they don't pass either the iLEAP and the course, they fail the course. They have to pass 2 parts out of 3 for those 3 courses.

Science & social studies is based on class grades only. (They're not as important.)

It is different every year, but this year in 8th grade they have the Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Jordyn thinks last year she only had 2, math and writing. But yes, once they get to high school it gets very different.

3rd through 8th grade do roughly the same testing types. The subjects anyway. On the iLEAP, there are no constructed response sections for science or social studies. On LEAP (4th & 8th) there are 3 sections of constructed response for each of those subjects. But math & language arts is the same every year.

9th grade ONLY does math & language arts iLEAP (because schools don't make all 9th graders take, say Biology and Civics, as their 9th grade courses....they might take Chemistry & American history).

10th grade takes the first part of the GEE which is math & language arts. 11th grade takes science & social studies, and this is the only time that students must pass science & social studies.
