What are your schools/classes doing (if anything) as an end of year gift for your teachers? I'm feeling really bombarded with this right now. Kevin is 'graduating' from 5th grade this year, and I know that it's a 'big deal' for the kids ... They have a 5th grade luncheon which will be a lot of fun. It's at a really nice banquet hall, the kids dress up, they have a DJ and catered lunch, etc. No problem with that. They also have an awards assembly the last week of school, great. Without counting the 'special areas' of music, art, PE, there are 4 5th grade teachers, and the kids rotate classrooms. I guess it's tradition to 'present' the teachers with an end of year gift (like a gift cert. or something) ... and they're asking for $20 donation per child, with money split equally among the 4 teachers. (4 classes, 30 kids in each ... assuming at least 25 per class contribute, that's like $625 per teacher???) It's not like these teachers have had the kids since kindergarten! Then, they're asking for smaller amounts ($1-2) for the special areas. Now, this in itself isn't so bad, but Kevin is also in a gifted program ... there are 5 teachers there, 2 of whom are retiring this year. SO for that, they're collecting $10 per kid for the retiring teachers ($5 each) + another few dollars for the other 3.
Add to that the fact that Kelli (my 7 y.o.) is also in gifted, different program/different teachers, and that group is asking for another $20 or something for end-of-year gifts for that. Her regular teacher is retiring, and the class mom is putting together a Creative Memory scrapbook ... she just asked for pictures of the kids, some writing things, and a couple of dollars to help defray some costs, and I have no problem with this.
I have no problem with any of it individually, I suppose ... but collectively, I'm going broke!
Don't get me wrong, I love the teachers ... I respect them all, I think they've done a great job, I feel my kids were very fortunate in getting the quality teachers they had this year. The fact that they participated in the gifted programs and had such fabulous experiences is a gift ... and each teacher deserves everything in the world. I guess I'm just feeling overwhelmed, all at once, and wonder if this was 'typical.'
