DD's math teacher is the same way. Report cards came home on Friday and the average for 7th grade math is as follows and keep in mind there are 4 grade seven classes with 30-33 kids in each class.
number sense and numeration 69
geometry and spatial sense 68
patterning and algebra 71.
These marks are dismal at best. DD's marks were all in this range as well which brings me little comfort knowing that she is in the norm. My question to him at parent night will be what is he doing to change this. Surely he has to take some responsibility for these terrible marks.
ITA!! That's a reflection on the teacher, not the students, IMHO. She should be re-teaching everything, giving them study sheets, and letting them all retake the test except the one girl who passed.
Dh went over the test w/dd last night for todays retake. he said that the test was ridiculous in one place they had to take a fraction (I guess) out 13 times before they could find the common on it. & that had to be done twice upper & bottom. He told me the whole test was nothing like the pretest in the book or the homework they were doing.
The school has new math books this yr. & so far besides this teacher flying thru it all more than 1/2 the class has to retake the test every test. As a teacher I think that should tell her something about either how fast she's going or the test itself. if the test book that goes w/the text book is out to lunch then the teacher should be making up her own tests to coincide to what was taught.
I may be wrong but when only 1 kid passes a test something should be looked at. All the kids can't be failing & retakes shouldn't have to be given to most of the class & in this case the whole class except 1.
They retook the test today & she never went over or retaught anything. yesterday instead of math they wrote something about alcohol for Red Ribbon week. The teacher told them if they study they will pass. Huh??? Math is something that needs to be taught its not like SS where the kids can study the material & reread a chapter.
Dh asked my dd how she did on the retake because he spent alot of time w/her last night & a bit this morning. She thought she did fine & he said to me she said she did ok. I told him, if the kids including dd knew they were doing it wrong then they wouldn't, they all think they're doing the math right. DUH!!!!
This grade will stand no matter what it is & the sad thing is that if the kids fail again no one cares that there is one very big chapter they all didn't learn, except 1.
As a teacher myself, I have to say that if this happened in my class it would be a huge red flag that something went wrong - test didn't match what I taught, students didn't "get" it, something. I would look into it, reteach material, retest. Tests are meant to be evaulations of learning, and if the learning didn't occur, or the test doesn't match the learning, there needs to be a change. I'm really surprised this teacher didn't do that, unless she feels so much pressure to "cover" the required material coming down from above? It's amazing how much pressure teachers can be under to "get through the book" by the end of the year. Doesn't really excuse it, but could explain it.

Dee, I am sorry, I can imagine Nik's disappointment and yours too.
