Getting up in the morning...

Does your tween get up on his/her own or do you wake him/her up? My DS, Spencer is 12 and in 7th grade. I wake him up every morning. In the past he has set an alarm, but tends to just turn it off and go back to sleep. He can snooze that thing 100 times and still not get out of bed. I think he gets plenty of sleep. He's in bed by 9-9:30 and I wake him up about 6:40. It totally wrecks my morning if he misses the bus, which he's only done twice in 2 years. His school is 7 miles in the opposite direction of our house and my job. I just don't know how to make him more reponsible for getting himself up and out of bed each morning. If I don't prod him along, he'll dawdle along and miss the bus. I've been taking him to the bus stop because it's been so cold in the mornings. He has to be at the bus stop at 7:20 in order to catch the bus. Last Friday we rounded the corner just as the bus was pulling away from the curb. Fortunately the driver saw us and waited for him. I always thought that if I woke him up earlier he'd get around better, but it seems the MORE time he has, the MORE time he goofs off.

Any insight? Thanks!

hello Trish...... what happens if he misses the bus? He does not go to school??? is there any other way he could get there? maybe if he missed once he would learn a lesson? if not start taking things from him in the morning. dont let him be able to drag his feet. or offer an incentive for moving and getting up early. lay down some rules and start sticking to some kind of consequences.. good luck. I have this problem with my dd. she never moves in the morning. I have to take her to school, although me being late to work is not that bad. my boss understands. however your right these kids need to move. I take my dd to breakfast in the mornings if she moves quick if not she does not eat. (she wont eat at home) so its hard but an incentive for us. good luck.

We had a discussion about this recently.
