Guitar lesson ?

Does anyone's child take lessons for both the six string (acoustic or electric) and Bass at the same time?

Right now Connor plays and takes lessons for the electric guitar and he has expressed an interst in possibly learning to play bass as well. I have no problem with him learning more than on instrument, provided he takes the time to practice, but I am concerned with him learning both electric and Bass at the same time. I personally don't know of anyone who plays both Bass and six string (acoustic or electric)so I have no idea how difficult it would be for him to learn both at the same time.

We wouldn't be able to start him until after Christmas (The Bass would probably be his Christmas Gift).

Anyone?

I have no experience with guitar. In fact, I do not play an instrument, but my husband's side of the family plays many. My husband can play the horn, actually five different types of horn instuments. He found it easy to go from one type of horn to another. My daughter's violin teacher plays several types of string instuments because is was easy to pick up the next string instrument after she learned one.

I don't know if this will help.

I started playing the violin in 4th grade and picked up the viola in high school. It was really pretty easy. Notes were the same (different clef but a c is a c) and chords were made up of the same notes. Fingering was a little different but I picked it up quickly. I say go for it. I also played piano and once I added the third instrument I found I couldn't do all the practicing I should - violin teacher wanted 2 hrs/day, viola 1 hr, and piano 1 hr. Think about the amount of time he's willing to spend practicing too and his other commitments.

Good luck!

Hey there Stacy,

As Caroline says my DH plays guitar -- both acoustic & electric. He has played since he was a teen & went to music school & I believe he's mentioned that its easier to play bass if u know guitar. Also he has mentioned that one of his music competencies for entrance into music school was a piano test (all music, even vocalists) had to know how to play piano since most composing is done on it. Does Connor read music? I know there is something called tablature now instead of musical notes -- DH says that has been a recent development since more people can't read music nowadays but still wanna play an instrument. Anyway if he can read music that will help w/bass too.

Ugh sorry this got so long,
-- Ang

You make a good point here and one that I hadn't considered. Connor takes guitar now and is in a few choirs. He wanted to take voice (which would be ok as he could work on the music for choir during his voice lessons), and then add in bass. I hadn't considered the time constraints for practicing. Definatly some food for thought.

Another good point to bring up thank you. Connor actually knows both. His first guitar teacher taught Connor tab and didn't focus much on actual notes or in reading chords. This frustrated Connor a lot as he wanted to be able to just pick up sheet music and play. Thankfully Cononr also sings in a few three and four part harmony choirs, He also sang in a barbershop group for a little while, so he is able to read music. However, it takes him a little time to figure some things out, so he isn't as fluent with reading as he'd like to be. Especially when reading off a chord. I'm sure that he'll get there though as his new guitar teacher is teaching him by way of sheet music (no tab).

Good to know that reading music will help with bass.
