Hello everyone! I haven't been on this board in quite some time. It's Sylvia, username used to be nodinero...but I had to get a new name when I rejoined this site. I see some very familiar names are still here...Laura is still the cl, that's great! I've missed you all, had to get settled in all my new adjustments in life...so so many. Looking forward to being a part of the group again and catching up on what's been going on! Hope you guys remember me...otherwise you would just think I'm a freak! haha!

You know we are all here for you. I am sure you want to find out all you can before you have to explain things to your family. Take care and please jump in where ever. Its good that you came back.
Hey NODINERO...I wasn't going to open this thread because I didn't recognize the username.
Where ya been? I hope all is well. Don't be a stranger.
I never knew that about your daughter. It's interesting that you said high functioning autism because we keep hearing that term with asperger's and our counselor says it's pretty much the same thing, but from what I've read it seems that the link hasn't been completely established yet...at least by the scientists. When did you learn this about your daughter? Does she know? We haven't told Matthew yet. I'm nervous to. Thanks for the warm welcome...I missed this board a lot. You guys are so sweet here!
Oh wow Sylvia, sounds like a huge life long issue--so glad you guys seem to be getting a handle on it.
We moved to Orange County so about 45 minutes from Newport--we love Newport and enjoy going there for "adult" time on the weekend.
Yep I am STILL in school. I got my Associates in June and am now working toward my Bachelors!
I would love to see some updated pics of the boys if you get a chance.

Glad to hear the job is still going well for you...congrats on working your way up too! The boys must like the new addition to the family too huh? Are the boys enjoying school?
I have an old coworker whose son is high functioning Asperberger's; he attends a special ed school 1/2 day then is mainstreamed the rest of the day w/other kids. His son doesn't like changes in routine at all but other than that & the repetitive actions you'd never even guess.
When we visited PHX last Oct we stayed right near the Shaw Butte rec area. The weather was great, warm but since its not humid like here, much more tolerable at 90 degrees. Both my DH & ydd loved the hiking trails, me too! The only one who didn't like hiking was my older one ;-) We had gotten some cheap fares from SWA so that's why we went....definitely would visit again.
Anyway, glad to see you back & look forward to hearing more from you!
In our case we were suspicious of Rachel at about age 3 because she started doing odd behaviour like staring off into space, excessive jumping up and down, and she lost the little bit of language she had. We had a hard time getting her diagnosed because she is also very bright and was meeting all her milestones ,except language. We finally got her diagnosed when she was almost 5. She knows about the autism because she has been through a lot of therapy over the years. She is still speech delayed; she has a large vocabulary but talks in short sentences. Other than she talks to herself a lot, most of the other behaviours are gone. She is self conscious about her speech which gets in the way of her making new friends , but is quite comfortable with people she knows well. . We pulled her out of school at the beginning of Gr.2 because the noise distractions were really bothersome, and the school was not pushing her at all to do any work.
As for telling Matthew, I would. By his age he has probably already figured out that he is different from his friends, and this will help him know there is a reason for the way he is. You can also tell him that it most likely will not get in the way of him leading a full, productive life. There are many who believe that Einstein probably had Aspergers.
In our house we have found that siblings make wonderful therapists! Rachel role plays and tries out different social situations on her brothers at home. She knows she can trust them to help her without the risk of ridicule. HTH
