Homework or break first?

Do you have your kids do their homework right away after school or give them a break first? Do they do chores first or break first?
I usually like my kids to finish their homework first, but they insist on a break...so we'll see if we can all negotiate things. If they have soccer, it's a busy evening!

From Kindergarten on we've always had homework AS SOON AS THEY WALK THROUGH THE DOOR. My younger two still do this but Isaiah needs a breather. So he has a snack and has his time in room (he is required to straighten up

Kayleigh is really past the point of me telling her when to do her homework, she knows what her schedule is like each day and gets it done.

This is what we did last year: 1/2 hour of music practice right away. Then he didn't have to do his homework until after dinner. He had to do music right away b/c we live in a condo and I didn't want to bug the neighbours and I didn't want him doing it while his sister was in bed. Also, he didn't have any after school activities on weeknights.

This year will be different because I think he'll have swimming twice a week and we are moving to a house that has a basement there so he can practice music down there.

I try to encouage her to do it shortly after school.Because if she des not,she is kind of tired and she does not want to do it all.It is kind of nice having the majorty of homework done before dinner.Plus last night she was really tired and she went to bed and fell asleep by 8:30.It was nice that homework was done so that she could go to sleep when she was tired. There are nights when she has dance and she has to work around that. Most of her friends pretty much have to have homework done befre they can hang out.Different times work for different kids. When Gabby has to get stuff done after dinner she rushes or she is crabbing and it just isn't fun.She does take 1/2 an hour break before stating homework though.

I like to give my girls a chance to sit at the table and have a snack and talk with them but then it's straight to the homework (which they usually get out of doing right away since I have to run to pick up oldest dd from volleyball practice). Homework is dfinitely a must do before anything else.

Up until this year Jordyn always had gymnastics right after school til late in the evening, so if there was any homework she didn't finish in school she did it when she got home at night.

Homework after dinner sucks for us because they are pretty much ready to lay down and they are crabby. We read for 20-30 mins before bed. It's like our winding down time.

I think it depends on the kid. One of my daughters needs a break and one doesn't. If your child seems like they need a break, or asks for one, I would give one.
