A school district that received snow flurries on that day that we had a real snow day (theirs didn't even stick to the ground) let the kids go out to play in the snow (catch the snow). This is a once in a lifetime (or almost) educational opportunity for many of these students. The superintendent e-mailed all the schools and told them to get the kids back in class because they were WASTING instructional time.

I heard it from 2 different people that know people in the school district. One I heard it from just retired last year, so she is a GREAT source, and the other has a sister that teaches in that district (another great source).

and geography/history (timelines...wars that were affected by snow), and math, and writing, and certainly reading--how many of these kids have read stories or books that talk about snow???

Exactly!

They could've done a historical timeline showing how many times it snowed in LA in the past (X) years (insert whatever number) and compared amounts.

Thanks to Kelly (mom2emsopmax) for my beautiful siggy! Photobucket

I grew up where we never got snow, and I remember being let out to play in the flurries the one time it did snow when I was in elementary school. It was soooo exciting to finally experience snow.

As one of the PP said, it IS an educational opportunity to experience weather you never get, esp when so much of the rest of the country experiences that weather, and books/stories talk about snow.

And quite honestly, those kids are going to learn a heckuva lot better in an environment that inspires wonder and excitement than in one of theory and boredom with no real-life experiences. Sheesh!

Posts like yours make me really sad. I seriously wonder about the teaching credentials of a superintendent who wouldn't immediately grasp the value of such a lesson. A true educator would have dragged a microscope outside to let the childen examine snowflakes....

If I was still living in the south that would tick me off. I remeber our 1st winter here & the look on Nik's face when she 1st saw snow. She went out & touched it, tasted it, jumped, laid in it, you name it & she did it. Going on 3 yrs. & she still loves seeing it & being out in it. When we lived in the south she would see pics of snow, read about snow & see herself as a baby on her sled in the snow but she just couldn't comprehend it.

I just can't believe that a super has so little to do in her/his day to make that a priority.
