I think that it really depends on the child. My seven (almost eight) year old is terrified to be left alone, but her friends already are being left by their parents. My hubby and I think that they are way too young to be left but are considered overprotective by many of our friends. I just don't think that kids have the judgement to handle things until between 10-11. And some not even then!

Some states have a legal age; often as high as 12. To me, it depends on the maturity of the child, not a magic number of age. It seems like the unwritten rule in our area is 11+. I let ds stay home for 1/2 hour during the day when he was 9-10; now at 11 he gets home from school an hour before I do from work (but I call him daily when he gets home as he's more comfortable with me doing that, even though we live in a very safe area).

I think it depends on how long you are leaving them alone.

I agree it definately depends on the child. I chose 10 or 11, because to me that sounds like a good average. Also how long are we talking. 10 minutes or 3 hours, makes a big difference as to how they should be. I have left my dd stay home for awhile when she 8, but never would have let my ds. Also neither of them want to stay home alone for more than 30 minutes.
