This has been an interesting school year. My daughter attends a middle school (grades 6-8). There are approximately 600 students, 200 per grade. While it is a public school, it is also a feeder school for one of the most rigorous prep schools in the country. Academically, it is very competitive, and there is no leveling. Several of my daughter’s friends have been grounded for receiving a single B. My daughter really struggles to keep up, and has several hours of homework every night. Last term she received a C+ in math, so she was among a handful of kids who did not make the honor roll. So far this term she has a A average in math. I often think how much easier it would be if she went to a different school.
Socially she has done very well. My neighborhood was the only neighborhood in our elementary district to attend this middle school. So, she didn’t attend elementary school with most of the kids in her school. This gave her a fresh start. While she is not a queen bee, I have heard from parents and other girls that she is considered popular. She solidified her friendships with some girls in the area, and has made a lot of new friends. Popularity doesn’t seem important to my daughter, but she is enjoying some of the attention she is getting from the boys.
