church's VBS this yr. the theme is 'cracking the character code'; it is set up to be like a sherlock holmes/scotland yard dective theme. each night's lesson will be on a specific character trait w/a bible story to illistrate that lesson. for example, the first night story is ruth and naomi, illistrating compassion and kindness. the lessons are well written and i like the idea of focusing on a character trait each night, but the detective theme is kind of hard to decorate around. the younger vbs classes are focusing on the sites around london or scotland yard as thier decorating themes. we have a giant cardboard big ben, a castle has been built around the doorway of the 1 -2 gr room etc.

i want the pre-teen room to be more 'grown-up', but i want it to stand out as well. i've decided to focus more on the detective part of the theme and am trying to decorate my room like a dective office. i made a door sign that says "dective office : pre-teen dept" , and open and closed sign to hang on the door handle and a fake bush to put on the hall wall next to the door. inside the class room i have arranged the big kids' tables in an L shape in the back corner w/the words "bible study headquarters' in big balloon letters on the wall behind it. on another wall i put balloon letters that say "the usual suspects" on the first night, we will fingerprint the kids and hang them on this wall around the display. on the wall behind the craft table i put up balloon letters saying "spy activities". on the main focal wall there is a big 3ft by 3ft poster that came w/the vbs teachers packing, it goes w/the theme and has things to hang on it each night. i am going to take my son's desk and put it in one corner w/a typewriter, old phone, pencil sets etc on it as a focal detective desk. i am also bringing mystery books for this age group from home to scatter around the room.

does anyone any ideas or suggestions of ways to add to the theme ? i still have plenty of wall space open and arranged the tables so that most of the floor space is open for skits.

How about something on the wall with names of great dectives and some of the mysteries they solved? Maybe print out some pictures of them from the internet or something?

That sounds great already! I think the 2 themes (character and Sherlock Holmes) are terrific! (I studied the Book of Ruth this year, and really enjoyed it.)

I like Sherri's suggestion of famous real/fictional detectives.

How about clues leading to the next night's story? Do they have the list of bible stories ahead of time? You could do something like the next night's story comes from a certain book, the main character is male/female, the name starts with a letter, and the next night they can come in and "solve the mystery"?
