It's probably too late, but with the very first rude word out of that girl's mouth, I would have been all over her about respectful words and body language. And each subsequent infraction would have gotten the same lecture.
Obviously, she's not being parented well. A mom who ignores a "no peanuts" rule risks *killing* another child--and it sounds as if she's raising her child to be that selfish, too--but it doesn't matter how disadvantaged your upbringing is, you can still treat others with respect and decency.
The girl is rude because she gets away with it, not because she's miserable. Lots of teens have bouts of misery, but many are also blessed with parents who uphold the same standards of behavior, regardless of the circumstances. Requiring a high level of behavior for her to live up to is probably the kindest thing you could do for her, and you may be the only one who does it.
