Gee, these short titles sure limit you! Anyway, I just wanted to stop by here and ask you ladies a question. I'm 21, and my "baby" brother, who will be 11 soon, will be graduating from elementary school (Grade 5) in June. It's SO hard to beleive- it seems that it wasn't so long ago that I was in Grade 5 and he was born! It will be the first time in 15 years that a child form my family hasn't gone to that school (I have another brother who is 18 1/2)!

My question is: I want to get him a gift for his "graduation". It isn't really made that big of a deal here: just a short ceremony at a school assembly. I still wanted to get him something- not too big or inexpensive, just something that says "My little brother is going to MIDDLE school"! I was thinking of getting him an English "football" shirt when I go overseas next month (he LOVES Manchester United!). Is that too impersonal? Anyway, I would love to hear suggestions about what you have gotten your children, or what the child's siblings have gotten them.

Thanks,

Cathy

I'm afraid I am no help. Our schools have a graduation from Kindergarten and then it's saved for the real thing when you graduate high school. I didn't buy my kids a gift for K graduation and I wouldn't if they had a 5th grade one either. I will only buy for graduation from high school or college.

Welcome, Cathy! Here's a link to a conversation we had about this recently. I hope it gives you some good ideas:

I think a team shirt like you mentioned is a good idea. It is personal, because you said it's a team he likes! I don't remember what was listed in the thread, but a music CD, books, or anything you know he'd like would be very thoughtful.

I think it is so sweet that you, as his big sister, want to get him something to remember this special time. I'm not into making a bigger deal of it then it is, but coming from big sis--that's really special. I think that the shirt you mentioned from Manchester United would be great! It shows that you have paid enough attention to him to know what team he likes and that you were thinking of him when you were on your trip.

Lucky boy to have such a nice sister! Have fun on your trip!

Thanks, everybody! I read all of your posts, and I agree with them. You're right- I think I will not make too big a deal out of this, since it IS only Grade 5! It's just that I still think of him as a baby..sniff sniff! Anyhow, I think I will stick with the team shirt, as well as something hockey related (I am going to be in the Czech Republic, and lots of good NHL players come from there!) for his birthday, which is June 6th.

Gee, I'm reacting like this NOW...I can't bear to think what it's going to be like when he graduates from high school! Of course, I'll be nearly 30 then and will likely have kids of my own to gush over! (;)
